Arthur V. Smyth
Class of 1941 alumnus Arthur V. Smyth, a retired timber company executive and professional forester, died in his home in Littleton, NH on May 19, 2007.
Smyth was a graduate of the University of Michigan where he received his degree from the School of Forestry and Conservation in 1941. In 1991 the School of Natural Resources awarded him the Distinguished Service Award. During WWII Smyth served in New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan as a member of the 650th Topographic Battalion, which made the maps for all major landings in the southwest Pacific. Mr. Smyth spent most of his career with Weyerhaeuser Company, and retired in 1984 as vice president for national affairs. For many years following his retirement, Smyth was an associate of the Columbia Consulting Group. Long active in professional forestry affairs, he was elected a Fellow of the Society of American Foresters and served as the Society's national president in 1990. He also served as Chairman of the Columbia River Section of the Society in 1962 and the Chairman of the National Capital Society of American Foresters in 1974.
In 1991 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the American Forestry Association for distinguished service to conservation of America's natural resources. He is the author of Millicoma Biography of a Pacific Northwestern Forest which was published in 2000. Smyth served for six years on the Department of Agriculture's User's Advisory Board. He was an emeritus member and former chairman of the Washington Export Council. He was a member of the Cosmos Club and the Mount Vernon Yacht Club.
At home in the forest or at sea Smyth was an ardent hiker and sailor. He sailed his sloop, "Irina II" to Bermuda, the Bahamas and participated in several tall ship events in New York harbor. During his time in New Hampshire he enjoyed daily walks across the Ammonoosuc River. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Gretchen Lloyd and is survived by his wife, Irene Snelling Smyth, daughter, Lisa Jensen, and grandchildren, Hannah and Silas Ratico. In lieu of flowers donations were contributed to the Forest Ecology Scholarship at the School of Natural Resources and Environment, in the memory of Arthur Smyth.

Vicki Jarvis
Vicki Jarvis, former SNRE facilities manager, passed away August 28, 2007
Vicki Jarvis, long-time School of Natural Resources and Environment building and facilities manager, passed away August 28, 2007, at the age of 63. Born in Ann Arbor on August 27, 1944, Vicki attended Ann Arbor High School and Washtenaw Community College. Vicki married her husband Duane on September 18, 1965. In May 1964 Vicki began her facilities management career at the University of Michigan at the Rackham School of Graduate Studies. After ten years, Vicki made the move to SNRE and remained here for 31 years, retiring in July 2005. Vicki enjoyed working in her yard every season of the year. Vicki will be missed by friends, family and the School of Natural Resources and Environment community. She is survived by her husband, Duane, and their German Shepherd, Lady.
