Announcing the President’s Challenge for Graduate Student Support
University of Michigan President, Mary Sue Coleman, understands the need for increased graduate support and has launched a new initiative to leverage the generous support of our donors. Beginning September 1, 2007 the President's Office will match fifty cents on every dollar raised for graduate student support.
In the final year of the Michigan Difference Campaign, SNRE continues to focus on its main fundraising priority - student support. The School of Natural Resources & Environment has over 350 graduates a year and less than $500,000 a year is generated to support these students from endowed funds.
To maintain our national leadership, we must continue to recruit and enroll the top students. Financial support plays an integral role in attracting and retaining those students to study at the U-M. These students are future government, business and non-profit leaders and often key to the recruitment and retention of outstanding faculty. Therefore, financial aid plays a dual role in maintaining the prestige of the School.
A full graduate or professional fellowship can often cost $40,000 to $50,000 annually. Therefore, individual endowments of $750,000 or more make the most difference by funding a graduate student for an academic year in perpetuity.
