SNRE professors part of new Great Lakes project looking at climate change adaptation

The University of Michigan and Michigan State University are jointly leading a federally funded effort to help Great Lakes-region residents anticipate and adapt to climate change. The interdisciplinary effort will be funded by a five-year, $4.2 million grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The project is co-lead by SNRE Professor Don Scavia; SNRE Professor Maria Carmen Lemos is also a member of the team. The new Great Lakes Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments Center (GLISA) will focus initially on the watersheds of lakes Erie and Huron and three critical topics: agriculture, watershed management and natural resources-based recreation and tourism. The Great Lakes center is one of six Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments awards, totaling $23.6 million, announced Sept. 22 by U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke. Read more ...

Message from the dean

First, let me thank the alumni who attended recent outreach events in Pittsburgh, Atlanta and Washington, D.C. We always enjoy seeing you and hearing about your careers (to view upcoming alumni events, see the schedule below). As most of you know, I am entering my 10th year as dean. It has been an honor to serve SNRE and the University of Michigan. The school has blossomed in the past decade, fueled by the interdisciplinary research of our faculty and students and the support and accomplishment of our alumni.

One area of expanded focus in the past decade has been the school's collective work on climate change and climate adaptation. Recently, I was fortunate to co-chair a national adaptation summit, and co-author the subsequent report released this week by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research. I encourage you to download the report. Also, climate adaptation is explored in depth in the next issue of Stewards. Look for that in your mailboxes later in October.

A sad and final note: Longtime Landscape Architecture Professor Chuck Cares died Sept. 21. Chuck not only was a great designer and teacher, but a great friend of the school and the University of Michigan. His story-telling abilities and exuberance will be missed greatly.

Rosina M. Bierbaum, professor and dean

Research Spotlight

How could climate change and our response to it affect the Great Lakes water quality? That's the primary question a team of 27 researchers from across the University of Michigan and collaborators at other institutions will answer with a new $5-million grant from the National Science Foundation. The researchers will focus on extreme weather events caused by climate change. SNRE Professor Michael Moore directs a team that will chart population and agricultural crops by county for the entire United States. For the Great Lakes region, they will gather even finer detail. Then they will project how a warming climate could change these patterns.
