FROM THE DEAN![]() On Sept. 1, after seven years as dean, I will take a yearlong "sabbatical" to serve as co-director of the World Bank's Development Report 2010, which focuses on climate change and development. I will be serving in this role as an SNRE professor, and I am grateful to the provost for making this opportunity possible. SNRE Professor Dave Allan, currently the associate dean of academic affairs, will serve as acting dean. Dave is a remarkable researcher, teacher and administrator, and his 18 years of SNRE experience will ensure that progress here continues unabated. Lastly, our annual fund drive begins soon. FEATURED PEOPLE![]() SNRE DOCTORAL students Nathan Engle and Christine Kirchhoff are expanding their research on climate change, thanks in part to former Vice President Al Gore. RESEARCH NEWSAs presidential candidates promote environmental jobs as a way to revive U.S. economic growth, a national survey wants to answer the question: Is the emerging "green" economy color-blind? Conducting the assessment of the green-jobs sector is SNRE's Minority Environmental Leadership Development Initiative, through its director, Professor Dorceta E. Taylor. The survey is examining the supply-and-demand dynamics of the environmental labor force.

ALUMNI UPDATESRUPERT CUTLER (B.S. '55) is chairman of the board of the Western Virginia Water Authority, a regional agency providing water and wastewater treatment for the City of Roanoke and Roanoke County, Va. He was the founding executive director of Virginia's Explore Park (an outdoor living history and environmental education facility) and the Western Virginia Land Trust. Earlier, he was an assistant professor of resource development at Michigan State University, assistant secretary of agriculture in charge of the U.S. Forest Service and Soil Conservation Service, and president of Defenders of Wildlife. JANINE BOLOGNA VELASCO (M.S. '93), assistant director for human capital management in the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management, recently was one of 10 federal employees to receive a 59th annual Arthur S. Flemming Award, which honors individuals with three-to-15 years of exemplary public service. ROBERT GIBBS (M.L.A. '84), founder of Gibbs Planning Group in Birmingham, Mich., is again teaching a course at Harvard University's Summer Graduate School of Design's Executive Education Program. The July 28-30 course is titled "New Urban and Smart Growth Retail Planning and Design Principles." LARISSA NOTRA (M.S. '04) is a Peace Fellow for The Advocacy Project, working with Survivor Corps (formerly the Landmine Survivors Network) in El Salvador.
