1)    Provide a high-level overview of the present state of carbon markets and demand for offsets from small, private forest owners in New England;   

2)    Analyze existing models for engaging forest owners in markets for ecosystem services.    

3)    Assess how other models might be adapted to fit the social, political, institutional, and economic needs of New England forest owners; and

For my internship, I worked at The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in London, England. Kew is a public organization dedicated to the conservation of wild plant and fungi species with research aimed at understanding the variety of plants and fungi worldwide.

The Wilderness Society

Nicholas Parker came to the Wilderness Society to work on a project that dealt with potential losses in the value of ecosystem services in the Sierra Nevada due to global warming.  His principal tasks included researching the current state of the science on economic valuation of ecosystem goods and services, devising potential methods for downscaling an existing model of a few large “bioregions” across the U.S., and searching for databases that could prove useful to a downscaled model.  Nicholas worked independently, for the most part, with occasional communication with a small team o
