City of Ann Arbor, Systems Planning

Jen Kullgren worked in the City of Ann Arbor’s Systems Planning unit, focusing on urban forestry. In addition to field work and tree assessments, she accomplished two major projects to advance Ann Arbor’s Urban Forestry program. First, she developed a best practices manual to create universal guidelines for forestry field and maintenance work. The goal of this document is to design uniform urban forestry management practices, to be followed by city staff and outside entities, to enhance, protect and sustain Ann Arbor’s urban forest. This manual is divided into two major categories; tree care and urban forestry planning. Second, she worked to revitalize Ann Arbor’s Champion Tree program. This program is designed to locate and recognize the largest tree in Ann Arbor for many different species. In addition, she created a map to show residents where the largest trees are located, as well as the current measurements for height, crown spread (width), and circumference of the trunk. Each tree is linked to associated annual and quantifiable benefits.
