Duke Energy
Charlotte Mack's summer internship was spent with Duke Energy, an independent energy company/utility operating in North Carolina, South Carolina, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky.
She worked for the Environment, Health and Safety Policy unit, a team of approximately eight individuals located in Cincinnati, OH. She was hired to work on two different research projects. The first project focused on a literature review of The Harvard Project on International Climate Agreements' scholarly articles and was further elaborated to include a current update on the international climate change negotiations and the United State's positions in this discussion. The second project provided an analysis of Duke Energy's various membership organizations, including The World Business Council for Sustainable Development, The Climate Group, The e8, 3C, and The Copenhagen Climate Council. Her final report also included a list of recommendations for Duke Energy's future involvement with the international climate change negotiations, focused on the use of Duke Energy's membership organizations. To culminate the internship, she presented her findings to employees from a variety of departments and locations. Charlotte had the ability enhance and put into practice a large number of skills which she was taught in both the School of Natural Resources and Environment and the Ford School of Public Policy. This allowed her to understand areas where she needed to build her knowledge and areas where she felt comfortable claiming expertise. In addition, this internship exposed Charlotte to current domestic climate change legislation occurring in real time, which allowed her to understand the more minute details of the policy process first-hand.
