Environmental Protection Agency
In this internship, Sean Southard worked with the US Environmental Protection Agency in Washington DC. He primarily worked with the Energy Star Labeling Branch, in the Climate Protection Partnerships Division, but also worked with the Commercial Buildings Program. Professionally, he learned how to analyze data about a new Energy Star program and proposed the products that best suit new Energy Star tiers. He also did research on various energy policies and analyzed how they affect Energy Star. Another thing he gained was how to effectively do a research project by getting first hand accounts and using organizational expertise as the basis for research. He also learned how to reach out to various organizations for joining the Energy Star program, and worked with other non-profits and businesses at many points. Personally, Sean developed better communication skills, both written and verbal. He had to write short memos throughout his experience and had to frequently communicate with those in the EPA, other government agencies, many organizations in the energy efficiency community, and many appliance manufacturers.
