The Northern Forest Center

Rebecca Brooke interned with The Northern Forest Center in Portland, ME.

The starting objectives of this internship were to:   

1)    Provide a high-level overview of the present state of carbon markets and demand for offsets from small, private forest owners in New England;   

2)    Analyze existing models for engaging forest owners in markets for ecosystem services.    

3)    Assess how other models might be adapted to fit the social, political, institutional, and economic needs of New England forest owners; and    

4)    Recommend a model to be used by the clients to engage forest owners in markets for ecosystems services.  As expected, these objectives evolved over the course of the internship in response to her workí¢â‚¬”objectives 1, 2, and 3 became the highest priority.

Rebecca's duties included: 

  • Intensive, self-directed research and synthesis of a complex information set
  • Design, scheduling and completion of multiple stakeholder interviews
  • Outlining, writing, and revising a 46 page research report for publication
  • Coordination with three client organizations
