Credits: 2 

Class format: First half lecture-style (either by Bunnell or guest speaker); second half will include student-led discussion on readings.

Includes above, plus stock assessment assignments, and group presentation (last two weeks).

Stock assessment assignments (3): Students will use existing fisheries data to estimate traditional fisheries analyses: von Bertalanffy growth curve, bioenergetic models, catch-curve analyses, stock/recruit models etc.

Messing with messy data" is a course that will actively engage students in topics where data exploration and modern regression techniques are used to approach a variety of issues, in particular dealing with ecological questions. The course will improve student learning by promoting educated and intuitive approaches to working with data. The combination of skills provided by this course will help the student in conceptualizing, solving and communicating data analysis.

Course Description:

This course considers integrative aspects of sustainable site design through lecture and discussion of readings and evaluation of built works.  You will learn about the premises and methods for achieving the ecological, aesthetic and engineering goals of sustainable site design. Social and economic aspects will be considered where relevant.  The semester will proceed in the topical sequence below.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In this course we will cover from the basic concepts in ecology that apply to forests to the challenges that forests face due to global change (climate change, landscape fragmentation, invasions). We will study the ecological mechanisms behind individuals, populations, communities and whole ecosystems together with the dynamic processes associated to forests (succession, disturbances). We will also review the role and impact of humans on these communities.
