No part of an award may be used for the payment of indirect costs to the recipient's institution. All funds must be expended directly in support of the proposed investigation. Any equipment purchased shall be the property of the institution.

 Students may apply to ONLY ONE program, either the Fellowship for Graduate Student Travel or Grants-in-Aid of Research.

No employee or contractor of the Smithsonian Institution may hold a Smithsonian fellowship during the time of his/her employment or contract, nor may an award be offered to any person who has been employed by or under contract to the Institution in the previous year, without the prior approval of the Office of Fellowships.

Financial support, in addition to a Smithsonian fellowship, for such purposes as research travel and equipment may be received from other sources provided that no special demands are made upon the fellow's time.  Permission to receive additional stipend support must be requested in writing from the Office of Fellowships.

All funds provided under Smithsonian fellowships, including stipends and research and travel allowances, are subject to tax.

Must submit a report on research or public service activity within one month of the end of the funding period.

Must perform research at selected locations.

Must indicate other potential funding sources.

Must conduct research in one of the following countries:

Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine,  Uzbekistan

May request for grant to be paid directly to tuition or direct deposit. Stipend paid monthly. Payment occurs 4-6 weeks after start of fellowship.

Sucessful applicants must evaluate tax liability.

Master's students can be funded for a maximum of two years, MFA students for three years, and PhD students for four years. MLA students should email AIGC contact (above) for eligibility questions).

This is a loan.  If awarded you must begin your payback six months after you have graduated in a career with tribal governments, Bureau of Indian Affairs and Bureau of Indian Affairs funded organizations on and off reservations. Organizations and other agencies with significant American Indian populations are reviewed case by case.  Fellows shall work 40 hours per week and/or full‐time work week. Fellows will be required to repay loans on a 1‐1 basis (one year of service for each year of loan payment).

It is expected that you will not otherwise work, travel, or teach during this Fellowship.

  Fellows will meet twice during the summer in conferences, once in June and again in August.

Indirect costs are not allowable from the Federal funds either for the Fellowships or for any costs associated with the Fellowships, including more than $2,000 budgeted for placement week. These costs, though, can be denoted as matching funds.

In Iceland

If an award recipient withdraws from the educational institution for which the award was granted, the award will be cancelled and the unspent portion, if any, will be returned to the Foundation. Awards are subject to state and federal income tax guidelines.

If a recipient chooses to take a course or series of courses at a tax exempt, accredited educational institution other than the one to which she was originally attending, or if she wishes to transfer to another tax exempt educational institution, the Otis M. Smith Scholarship Program Award will not be forfeited if the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan is notified in advance of such transfer to an eligible institution.

Health insurance, life insurance, tuition, and associated fees are not provided with this offer. 

Grants will not be made for the following types of projects:

Projects that do not support the implementation of the approved MotorCities General Management Plan or current activities, projects not located within the service areas of the recognized Stewardship Communities and/or Affiliates, General Operating Expenses, computer and/or computer systems, buildings or Equipment, unless a part of a rehabilitation project of a historic building, off-site costs associated with school field trips, including but not limited to bus rental expenses and venue admissions; endowments, requests from individuals, conferences and Annual Meetings

Grants cannot be used to fund:

• Travel Costs
• Individual Sponsorships
• Shipping Costs
• Individual School Fees
• Fundraisers

Grantees may not hold a DAAD grant with funding from another German, German-American or German-Canadian organization for the same period. Short-term grants with the May deadline must be started between four and 12 months after the application deadline.

Grant awards require a minimum 1:1 match of cash or contributed goods and services (in-kind) and a match of over 2:1 is encouraged.

Grant funds cannot be used for political advocacy, fundraising, lobbying or litigation activities or to support projects resulting from legally mandated mitigation projects.  The Foundation cannot provide funds for general administrative overhead or indirect expenses.  If you are uncertain about categories of budget items which may or may not be funded, please contact Suzanne Sessine.

Generally, not tenable for dissertation research.

Funds must be matched (at least one-to-one) with funds from non-federal sources.

No overhead charges can be deducted from the funds provided by the MSGC. Funding can be used for travel and to purchase supplies and services. Funding can also be used for faculty and student salaries if they are U.S. citizens. Funding cannot be used to purchase equipment or to pay salaries, stipends, or travel to persons that are not U.S. citizens.

Funds may not be used for personnel expenses, travel to meetings, equipment or supplies for laboratory-based research, or overhead or indirect costs.

Funds cannot be used for the following:  tuition, child care, travel to professional meetings or to begin a new appointment, travel to another institution for coursework, training or workshops, administrative overhead or indirect costs, personal computers, living allowances, or equipment of general use.

A maximum of $10,000 may be requested-any fellowship proposals requesting over $10,000 will be disqualified.

Funds are not normally provided for travel to conventions, travel or living expenses while conducting research, stipends of principal investigators, costs associated with manuscript preparation, or the indirect costs of institutions. 

Funding is partial and considered only for applicants who plan to be in residence at the Bio Station and/or base their research there.

Priority will be given to those applicants who: 1) plan to be in residence for at least a half term (4 of 8 weeks); 2) demonstrate financial support for their research from other sources such as their department, advisor, graduate school, fellowships, etc.
