CIC/Smithsonian Institute Fellowship $30,000

No employee or contractor of the Smithsonian Institution may hold a Smithsonian fellowship during the time of his/her employment or contract, nor may an award be offered to any person who has been employed by or under contract to the Institution in the previous year, without the prior approval of the Office of Fellowships.

Financial support, in addition to a Smithsonian fellowship, for such purposes as research travel and equipment may be received from other sources provided that no special demands are made upon the fellow's time.  Permission to receive additional stipend support must be requested in writing from the Office of Fellowships.

All funds provided under Smithsonian fellowships, including stipends and research and travel allowances, are subject to tax.

Waitt Grants $5,000 to $15,000

National Geographic Society grants may not be used for indirect costs, overhead, and other expenses not directly related to the project. Fringe benefits are also excluded, as are salaries.

Funds may not be used for travel to scientific/professional meetings or conferences, legal actions, land acquisition, endowments, construction of permanent field stations, or publishing research results. Tuition costs are not allowable.

Grant recipients are expected to provide the National Geographic Society with rights of first refusal for popular publication of their findings.

Rackham International Research Awards $7,000

May not be used exclusively for language training, but may submit proposals that combine language training with research. May not be used for the purchase of equipment or software. RIRA is a one-time only award.

BIE-Loan for Service Not specified

Master's students can be funded for a maximum of two years, MFA students for three years, and PhD students for four years. MLA students should email AIGC contact (above) for eligibility questions).

This is a loan.  If awarded you must begin your payback six months after you have graduated in a career with tribal governments, Bureau of Indian Affairs and Bureau of Indian Affairs funded organizations on and off reservations. Organizations and other agencies with significant American Indian populations are reviewed case by case.  Fellows shall work 40 hours per week and/or full‐time work week. Fellows will be required to repay loans on a 1‐1 basis (one year of service for each year of loan payment).

EPA-STAR (Science to Achieve Results) Fellowships up to $42,000

Master's level students may receive support for a maximum of two years. Doctoral students may be supported for a maximum of three years, usable over a period of four years. Cost sharing is not required.

Summer Graduate Research Fellowships $3,000 stipend, travel allowance

It is expected that you will not otherwise work, travel, or teach during this Fellowship.

  Fellows will meet twice during the summer in conferences, once in June and again in August.

If the award is to be used for fisheries research, scholarship recipients have been invited in the past to travel to Bay City, Michigan and present findings to SBWC membership during a future club meeting. The applicant should indicate their willingness to travel and present findings to the club as part of their application.

Otis M. Smith Scholarship for Single Mothers $2,500

If an award recipient withdraws from the educational institution for which the award was granted, the award will be cancelled and the unspent portion, if any, will be returned to the Foundation. Awards are subject to state and federal income tax guidelines.

If a recipient chooses to take a course or series of courses at a tax exempt, accredited educational institution other than the one to which she was originally attending, or if she wishes to transfer to another tax exempt educational institution, the Otis M. Smith Scholarship Program Award will not be forfeited if the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan is notified in advance of such transfer to an eligible institution.

Grants are to be applied to expenses directly related to the student's thesis work, such as summer field work, laboratory analyses, etc. Funds are not to be used to purchase capital equipment, attend conferences, or to pay salaries, tuition, or room and board during the school year. Funds must be spent within 18 months of receipt of the award. The educational institution attended by the applicant must not require or allow a grant to be turned over to the institution or decrease any funding or other benefit received by the applicant if a grant is awarded.
Candidates for Master's or equivalent degrees may receive a maximum of one grant, and Ph.D. candidates may receive a maximum of two grants. No more than two grants will be awarded to any one applicant during their graduate education.

Funding is partial and considered only for applicants who plan to be in residence at the Bio Station and/or base their research there.

Priority will be given to those applicants who: 1) plan to be in residence for at least a half term (4 of 8 weeks); 2) demonstrate financial support for their research from other sources such as their department, advisor, graduate school, fellowships, etc.

Funding is for both fall and spring semesters. We do not fund semesters separately. Checks are sent directly to the school. Manner of disbursement is left to the discretion of the school. Disbursement of spring checks are dependent upon fall grades and spring schedule. Students are eligible to receive one scholarship per year. We do not fund summer session, certificate programs or seminary programs.
