Tibor T. Polgar Fellowship $3,800 summertime grants; up to $1,000 research support

Polgar Fellowships may be awarded for studies anywhere within the tidal Hudson estuary from New York Harbor to the Federal Dam at Troy, New York, including the four marshes of the National Estuarine Research Reserve (Stockport Flats, the Tivoli Bays, Iona Island Marsh, and Piermont Marsh).

CIC/Smithsonian Institute Fellowship $30,000

No employee or contractor of the Smithsonian Institution may hold a Smithsonian fellowship during the time of his/her employment or contract, nor may an award be offered to any person who has been employed by or under contract to the Institution in the previous year, without the prior approval of the Office of Fellowships.

Financial support, in addition to a Smithsonian fellowship, for such purposes as research travel and equipment may be received from other sources provided that no special demands are made upon the fellow's time.  Permission to receive additional stipend support must be requested in writing from the Office of Fellowships.

All funds provided under Smithsonian fellowships, including stipends and research and travel allowances, are subject to tax.

Ed N. Harrison Memorial Scholarship Fund - Bird Research $300

Funding for field-related travel and research only. Must investigate breeding biology or conservation of bird species in South or Central America.

Funds may not be used for personnel expenses, travel to meetings, equipment or supplies for laboratory-based research, or overhead or indirect costs.

New York Senate Fellowships $32,000

All Senate fellowships are on-site in Albany, Capital City of New York. Class work and outside employment are prohibited during the full time fellowship. Housing in Albany is the responsibility of the Fellow.

Biweekly installments prorated from the first day to the last day of enrollment.

Allocation of matching funds must be specified in the budget and may consist of up to one/half month's salary for the faculty advisor, waived tuition, equipment and supplies, and any other costs typically used as matching funds.

The successful applicant must submit a written report of project results at the completion of the project to both The Garden Club of America and the Desert Botanical Garden.

Graduate Seminar on Global Transformations $4,500
Students must commit to participating in the seminar for three terms, and will be expected to make a presentation to the group following their research trip, and to discuss methodology, challenges, and results with seminar participants. A three‐page report on findings must be submitted to CICS within six weeks of return from the research trip. This report may be used in CICS publications.

Each Rose Fellow is expected to devote his or her full attention to the Fellowship, working the same hours and on the same vacation and holiday schedule as other employees of their sponsoring organization. A Fellow may not have any other paid employment or independent consulting work, unless prior written permission is given by the director of the Fellowship and an authorized representative of the partner organization.

Indirect costs are not allowable from the Federal funds either for the Fellowships or for any costs associated with the Fellowships, including more than $2,000 budgeted for placement week. These costs, though, can be denoted as matching funds.

Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research $5,000

Amounts will depend on travel costs, but will ordinarily be in the range of several hundred dollars up to about $5,000. Grants are payable to the individual applicant. Lewis and Clark Fund grants are taxable income, but the Society is not required to report payments. It is recommended that grant recipients discuss their reporting obligations with their tax advisors.

Waitt Grants $5,000 to $15,000

National Geographic Society grants may not be used for indirect costs, overhead, and other expenses not directly related to the project. Fringe benefits are also excluded, as are salaries.

Funds may not be used for travel to scientific/professional meetings or conferences, legal actions, land acquisition, endowments, construction of permanent field stations, or publishing research results. Tuition costs are not allowable.

Grant recipients are expected to provide the National Geographic Society with rights of first refusal for popular publication of their findings.
