Funding Abstract: 

The American Council on Germany is currently seeking applications for our 2011 McCloy Fellowship in Environmental Policy. The fellowship provides American and German environmental professionals and academics with the opportunity to travel across the Atlantic for roughly three weeks to conduct research of their own accord. The fellowship program welcomes applications from professionals in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors who are engaged in environmental policy, journalism, and law, as well as those in academia who are undertaking research that bears significance for environmental policy in the United States, Europe, and beyond.

The fellowship provides roundtrip transatlantic airfare to Germany or the United States, pre-approved inter-city travel, and a daily stipend of $200 to cover housing, meals, and local transportation for up to 21 days abroad. Fellowships may be extended for up to 7 additional days if a compelling need for extra time is demonstrated. Fellows are given the flexibility to designate a timeframe for travel, provided that the fellowship is utilized within one calendar year of receipt of the award.

Application Process and Required Materials: 

To apply, please submit:

1) a cover letter outlining your personal and professional objectives for the fellowship;

2) a project proposal of at least two pages detailing the background and scope of your project, the general sources and institutions with whom you would like to consult while abroad, and the relevance of the project for environmental policy and transatlantic relations;

3) a current curriculum vitae;
4) two letters of recommendation; and  
5) (if applicable) a statement outlining why an extension beyond 21 days is preferred.

Funding Abstract: 

The program is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). It is open to individuals from developing countries currently enrolled in academic institutions in the United States, Canada, and other selected countries, pursuing doctoral programs, and who are between their 3rd and 5th year of studies. The program aims to bridge the gap between research findings and the policy development process. While research often has profound policy implications, it must be communicated effectively to a variety of nontechnical audiences in order to have an impact.

Developing-country applicants may be in any field of study but their research focus should be related to one or more of the following:

  • Family planning and/or reproductive health (FP/RH), including family planning/HIV integration. 
  • Maternal and child health (MCH), including family planning/MCH integration. 
  • Contraceptive use/behavior. 
  • Population growth. 
  • Adolescent reproductive health. 
  • Poverty and health equity. 
  • Gender issues, including gender-based violence (GBV), early marriage, and male engagement.
  • Population, health, and environment interrelations.

The Tamara L. Reeme Scholarship Fund is for students whose educational focus aligns with Behavior, Education and Communication or the Environmental Policy and Planning programs.  This Scholarship was made possible by a School of Natural Resources and Environment alumna with the goal to assist exceptional students in these fields of study.  Award recipients have demonstrated a commitment to course and field work, while exemplifying characteristics needed to address the current environmental issues.

Tamara Reeme is a 1983 BS alum.  She established the Scholarship because she had such a wonderful experience at SNRE and is in a position to help students.

The Center for the Education of Women announces the Robin Wright Graduate Fellowship with a grant of up to $4,000. The fund will support research by a graduate student from the Islamic World or Africa matriculating in the Rackham Graduate School.

Preference will be given to graduate students pursuing research in international and global issues in the contemporary period, with a focus on political, economic or societal change as well as new solutions to issues arising from the spread of globalization.
