Rackham provides funds for grants and fellowships for current UM graduate students interested in African Studies. Each academic year, funds will be available to support graduate students who are studying or researching in the field of African Studies. Students can apply to CAAS for small grants to help cover research expenses.

Departments and schools are encouraged to nominate students they want to be considered for fellowships. The African Initiative Fellowships are awarded by and distributed through the Center for Afroamerican and African Studies.

The Rangel Graduate Fellowship is a program that aims to attract and prepare outstanding young people for careers in the Foreign Service in which they can help formulate, represent and implement U.S. foreign policy.  Each year, the Rangel Program selects 20 outstanding Rangel Fellows in a highly competitive nationwide process and helps support them through two years of graduate study, internships and professional development activities, and entry into the Foreign Service.  This program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service and those with financial need.  Fellows who successfully complete the program and Foreign Service entry requirements will receive appointments as Foreign Service Officers, one of the most exciting and rewarding careers available.

The Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) Multi-Country Fellowship Program supports advanced regional or trans-regional research in the humanities, social sciences, or allied natural sciences for U.S. master's students, doctoral candidates, and scholars who have already earned their Ph.D. Preference will be given to candidates examining comparative and/or cross-regional research. Applicants are eligible to apply as individuals or in teams.

Scholars must carry out research in two or more countries outside the United States, at least one of which hosts a participating American overseas research center. Approximately ten awards of up to $12,000 each will be given in the doctoral candidate/post-doctoral scholar competition. The Rackham Graduate School announces 2011 Rackham International Research Awards (RIRA) to support terminal master's and doctoral students conducting degree-related research outside the United States and Puerto Rico. Students must complete the Rackham International Research Awards application and submit one copy of:

  • A statement of no more than three 12-font double-spaced pages, written in a language for non-specialists, that describes the proposed research and explains its significance and feasibility. Applicants should also discuss any language skills they may need to conduct the proposed research.
  • A full budget and timetable discussion that presents anticipated costs and shows all other sources of support, pending and confirmed, for the proposed period of research.
  • A letter of no more than two pages from the student's principal advisor (chair of the dissertation committee, if the student has an approved dissertation proposal). The writer should address the student's achievement and promise, previous sources of support, and any obstacles facing the student in securing external or internal funding for research abroad. The letter should be submitted electronically as part of the online application.
  • An unofficial copy of the University of Michigan graduate academic record (transcript).

The Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM) seeks to recognize emergent scholars in the field of public policy and management by presenting an award for the best Ph.D. dissertation in public policy and management.
Winners receive a cash award in the amount of $1,000 in addition to a plaque, recognition at the annual APPAM fall research conference, and publication of an abstract in the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management. A separate grant covering travel costs to the fall conference also will be provided.
