  • Project Summary. Include information on the collaborative aspects of the project as well as the scientific research andeducational activities. Intellectual merit and broader impacts anticipated from the international activity must be addressed inseparate paragraphs.
  • Project Description (15 pages max.) and Results from Prior NSF Support (2 pages max., included within project description) covering research objectives and methodology; description of cooperative arrangement, including identification of host researchers or mentors; details on the scientific significance of the host country/counterpart institution; a description of the role of the foreign institution/country in the graduate student’s thesis and career objectives; tentative schedule of activities; expected scientific and international benefits to be derived.
  • Biographical sketch of foreign counterpart(s) (max. two pages/person).
  • Letter of endorsement signed by a senior investigator with the counterpart host institution limited to the following wording “This student has advanced to candidacy for a Ph.D. degree.” This statement must be signed and dated by the department chairperson,graduate dean, or other responsible administration official.

The Academy Fellowship Program is an annual leadership training program for multi-ethnic students who want experience working on low-income and minority economic development. Fellows work independently and develop expertise in a project area with the direction of a Program Manager and the Academy Director.
Fellows conduct research, write reports and position papers, help organize community events, and interface regularly with multi-ethnic community, corporate, and government leaders. They write articles for various papers, represent the Greenlining Institute on TV and radio, and give presentations and testimony at policy hearings. Fellows also attend small group seminars on lobbying skills, public speaking, writing, media relations, and other personal development topics. Students also attend a Power Lunch series in which community, corporate, and government leaders are invited to meet informally with all Academy participants.

THE HOGAN/SMOGER ACCESS TO JUSTICE ESSAY CONTEST offers law students an opportunity to receive reward and recognition for expounding on whether and how the courts can be used to obtain justice.

For 40 years, the competition was known as the Roscoe Hogan Environmental Law Essay Contest, providing law students an opportunity to investigate and offer solutions to the multitude of injustices inflicted on the environment.   The contest was established in 1970 by the late Roscoe B. Hogan of Birmingham, Alabama, a prominent environmental lawyer.  With additional support from noted attorney Gerson Smoger, the contest was renamed and expanded beginning with the 2011 competition.

The Hogan/Smoger Access to Justice Essay Contest is a $5,000 cash award given to the author of the winning essay.  The 2011 topic is:  The Gulf Oil Spill: Who Are The Victims & How Do They Get Compensated?

In addition to the $5000 cash prize, winner will also receive: recognition  in the Public Justice newsletter and on the website;  publication of the essay in the Vermont Law School’s online Journal of Environmental Law; and a free Public Justice Foundation membership for the Contest Year.  

Application Process and Required Materials: 

Each entry must be submitted through a faculty adviser.  All entrants must submit an INTENT TO ENTER FORM (see link below) by January 31, 2011.   The deadline for the essay is March 31, 2011.  A panel of nationally renowned trial lawyers and law professors will judge the entries.

 

Application must consist of a hard copy (typed) and a computer disc containing the essay and the abstract. The pages of the hard copy must be firmly fastened together with a cover page which must contain the following information:

 

  1. Title of Essay (must appear at the top of the first page of the essay)
  2. Author’s Name
  3. Author’s year in law school and expected graduation date
  4. Law school name and address
  5. Date submitted for academic credit, if so submitted
  6. Author’s permanent and school addresses and phone numbers (IMPORTANT: indicate effective dates for all addresses)
  7. Sponsoring faculty member name and phone number

Students must submit an abstract (100 words or less) describing the paper. Please include name, address, law school and phone number on the abstract. The author’s name and law school must NOT appear anywhere in the essay other than on the cover page and abstract.

 

Essays must not exceed 50 pages of 8½ by 11-inch paper, double-spaced, excluding footnotes.

Major capital equipment will not be covered; minor amounts of materials and supplies may be considered, but are best covered by other sources of funds. Salaries or stipends for the investigator are not allowed, but salaries for field assistants will be considered if the work cannot be carried out safely or efficiently by one person.

Within eight weeks the principal investigator will receive a decision. If the pre-application is approved, the Board will send the project director an email with a link to the full application online.

Step 2: Application
After receiving an application, the project director must complete and submit their application online. The Conservation Trust accepts applications throughout the year. However, please allow eight months from the board's receipt of your application for the board to formally review and consider it.

Funding Restrictions: 

Grants may not be used for:

- indirect costs, overhead, and other expenses not directly related to the project

- fringe benefits and salaries

- travel to scientific/professional meetings or conferences, legal actions, land acquisition, endowments, construction of permanent field stations, or publication of research results

- While the Conservation Trust acknowledges the need to preserve archaeological sites and artifacts, our current budget limits prevent us from funding such requests
