Funding Abstract: 

 The Steinbrenner Institute for Environmental Education and Research at Carnegie Mellon is offering competitively-awarded three-year PhD fellowships for interdisciplinary study of topics related to U.S. environmental sustainability. 

Example topics of interest include water resource availability with consideration of population growth and climate change; measurements and indices of resource availability (e.g., crops, natural gas, coal, minerals) coupled with "best use" of limited U.S. resources; maximum potential crop yield in the U.S. and implications for sustainable population; indices of soil quality and resilience, and relationships with land use; implications of health care policy and immigration policy on resource requirements; and others.

A postdoctoral research fellow at SNRE's International Forestry Resources and Institutions (IFRI) research initiative, Lauren Persha, along with co-investigator and SNRE Professor Arun Agrawal, have received a nearly $400,000 grant from the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie) to investigate the outcomes of Tanzania's ongoing forest management systems.

The Center for the Education of Women announces the Robin Wright Graduate Fellowship with a grant of up to $4,000. The fund will support research by a graduate student from the Islamic World or Africa matriculating in the Rackham Graduate School.

Preference will be given to graduate students pursuing research in international and global issues in the contemporary period, with a focus on political, economic or societal change as well as new solutions to issues arising from the spread of globalization. Particular attention will be given to research abroad. Also, in order to ensure that as broad a range of people as possible is able to do research on international topics, women graduate students and students intending to return to their home countries to contribute their scholarly and professional skills are particularly encouraged to apply.

Funding Abstract: 

The Cooperative Institute for the North Atlantic Region (CINAR) announces a competition for a Postdoctoral Scholar Fellowship at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). CINAR is a cooperative institute between NOAA and a consortium of academic partners. The mission of CINAR is to "conduct and coordinate cutting-edge research to enable informed decisions by NOAA for sustainable and beneficial management of the U.S. Northeast Atlantic shelf." The activities of CINAR are organized around five broad themes:

- Ecosystem Forecasting

- Ecosystem Monitoring

- Ecosystem Management

- Protection and Restoration of Resources

- Sustained Ocean Observations and Climate Research

The successful candidate is expected to choose a research project related to CINAR, to interact closely with NOAA-funded investigators at WHOI, to visit and interact with investigators at NOAA laboratories and to advance collaborations between WHOI and the broad range of NOAA research activities.

** Students who may have intended to apply to the Smithsonian competition have a higher probability of success if put forward by the University of Michigan through this competition process.

Students must have completed all course work for their programs, and must have been admitted into doctoral candidacy and satisfied all requirements except completion of the dissertation in order to qualify.

Since 1951, Nobel Laureates in chemistry, physics, and physiology/medicine convene annually in Lindau, Germany, to have open and informal meetings with students and young researchers.

The Laureates lecture on the topic of their choice in the mornings and participate in less formal, small-group discussions with the students in the afternoons and some evenings.

In addition to this valuable interaction, the participants enjoy the picturesque island city of Lindau. This medieval city—rich in central European culture—is located at the eastern end of Lake Constance, just north of the Swiss Alps, at the common border of Austria, Germany, and Switzerland.

Yi Hou identified data sources for Colorado River Basin water risk index including water withdrawal, run off, population change rate, drought (standard precipitation index), and reservoir capacity percentage.  She produced maps illustrating current, short, medium and long term geographic water risk levels for power plants by county in the Colorado River Basin.
