Every year Wild Gift recruits outstanding new leaders to its Network of better-world entrepreneurs through an intensive application process. They have begun to accept applications for the 2013 class. Through a rigorous application process, dynamic young individuals (ages 21-35) with innovative, entrepreneurial ideas are recruited. Successful applicants exhibit a deep passion and commitment to wilderness and sustainability and the capacity to bring better world projects to fruition.

The Kelly McKinnell Memorial Award of $1,000, provides the selected student an opportunity to travel anywhere in the world to work on a photographic exploration and documentation project with the goal of promoting world cultural understanding or environmental awareness. The Award is open to all enrolled UM students.

The American Institute of Indian Studies announces its 2013 fellowship competition, and invites applications from scholars who wish to conduct their research in India. Junior fellowships are awarded to Ph.D. candidates to conduct research for their dissertations in India for up to eleven months.

The Gloria Barron Wilderness Society Scholarship was created in honor of Gloria Barron, a dedicated educator and tireless advocate for wilderness protection, and is administered by The Wilderness Society, a leading conservation organization based in Washington, D.C. The scholarship amount varies from year to year. Historically, The Wilderness Society has awarded $10,000 to graduate students to support their research and preparation of a paper on an aspect of wilderness.

SNRE Professor Dan Brown served as editor on this book, along with three other collaborators. As governments and institutions work to ameliorate the effects of anthropogenic CO2 emissions on global climate, there is an increasing need to understand how land-use and land-cover change is coupled to the carbon cycle, and how land management can be used to mitigate their effects.
