Funding Abstract: 

The program is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). It is open to individuals from developing countries currently enrolled in academic institutions in the United States, Canada, and other selected countries, pursuing doctoral programs, and who are between their 3rd and 5th year of studies. The program aims to bridge the gap between research findings and the policy development process. While research often has profound policy implications, it must be communicated effectively to a variety of nontechnical audiences in order to have an impact.

Developing-country applicants may be in any field of study but their research focus should be related to one or more of the following:

  • Family planning and/or reproductive health (FP/RH), including family planning/HIV integration. 
  • Maternal and child health (MCH), including family planning/MCH integration. 
  • Contraceptive use/behavior. 
  • Population growth. 
  • Adolescent reproductive health. 
  • Poverty and health equity. 
  • Gender issues, including gender-based violence (GBV), early marriage, and male engagement.
  • Population, health, and environment interrelations.

Jackie Turner, a U-M undergraduate with a double major in the Program in the Environment (PitE) and Screen Arts and Cultures, found that her interests in environment, sustainability, developing nations and documentary filmmaking converged when she traveled to Mpala, a 48,000-acre wildlife conservancy and biodiversity research center in Kenya, as part of a class taught by SNRE professors Rebecca Hardin and Johannes Foufopoulos.

Students must have completed all course work for their programs, and must have been admitted into doctoral candidacy and satisfied all requirements except completion of the dissertation in order to qualify.

Since 1951, Nobel Laureates in chemistry, physics, and physiology/medicine convene annually in Lindau, Germany, to have open and informal meetings with students and young researchers.

The Laureates lecture on the topic of their choice in the mornings and participate in less formal, small-group discussions with the students in the afternoons and some evenings.

In addition to this valuable interaction, the participants enjoy the picturesque island city of Lindau. This medieval city—rich in central European culture—is located at the eastern end of Lake Constance, just north of the Swiss Alps, at the common border of Austria, Germany, and Switzerland.
