The Summer Graduate Research Fellowship is a non-residential research and writing program sponsored by the Institute for Humane Studies. It is open to advanced graduate students (doctoral or law), intending academic or research careers who are conducting research germane to the classical liberal intellectual tradition. The Fellowship provides an opportunity to work on a thesis chapter or a paper of publishable quality and to participate in interdisciplinary seminars under the guidance of a faculty supervisor.
The fellowship begins in June with a short conference at the Institute for Humane Studies in Arlington, Virginia, where Fellows have a chance to present the context of their work to other graduate students. After the first conference, Fellows will return to their home universities for the rest of the summer to continue independent research and writing on their own projects. In August, Summer Fellows return to IHS to participate in another conference, to present the results of their work over the summer, and to discuss issues of importance to young academics.
