The Jennings Randolph (JR) Program for International Peace awards nonresidential Peace Scholar Dissertation Scholarships to students at U.S. universities who are writing doctoral dissertations on topics related to peace, conflict, and international security. Each year the program awards approximately ten Peace Scholar Fellowships. Fellowships last for 10 months starting in September. Fellowships are open to citizens of any country. Dissertation projects in all disciplines are welcome.

Funding Abstract: 

The Center for International and Comparative Studies (CICS) announces a not-for-credit seminar for master's students and doctoral students at the pre-candidacy level intending to pursue field-based research outside the United States. The seminar explores epistemological connections and dissonance among disciplines and professions involved in global transformations. It meets approximately seven times a term for two-hour sessions, which are organized around the discussion of presentations by participating students. Several sessions will also be devoted to the discussion of papers, research proposals, and faculty and visitor presentations.

Each student admitted to GSGT will have access to a restricted research fund of $4,500, to be used for a preliminary visit to the prospective foreign research site and for specialized language training necessary for dissertation research.

    PERC is an internationally recognized institute dedicated to seeking out and developing market solutions to environmental problems. Based in Bozeman, Montana, PERC pioneered the approach known as free market environmentalism and conducts research in areas of water, forestry, public lands, and endangered species among others.
    Research fellows are graduate and law students with an interest in natural resources and environmental issues. Fellows spend three months in Bozeman, Montana researching and writing a paper under the supervision of PERC Associates. Fellows are required to complete a paper of publishable quality. In addition, fellows must give three seminars to outline, report on, and summarize their research findings. At the end of the year, the author of the best papers produced by that year's group of Fellows is awarded a $250 honorarium. In addition, $250 is awarded to the person who originally brought the winning Fellow to the PERC's attention.

    The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (MMMF) awards educational grants to women from developing countries whose graduate studies and future plans aim to benefit women and children in their respective regions. Commitment to this goal is an essential selection criterion.

    The MMMF was founded in 1981 to honor the memory of Margaret Craig McNamara (1915-1981), the wife of Robert S. McNamara, President of the World Bank from 1968-1981.

    The Udall Foundation provides a ten-week summer internship in Washington, D.C., for Native American and Alaska Native students who wish to learn more about the federal government and issues affecting Indian Country. The internship is fully funded: the Foundation provides round-trip airfare, housing, per diem for food and incidentals, and a stipend at the close of the program.

    Interns work in congressional and agency offices where they have opportunities to research legislative issues important to tribal communities, network with key public officials and tribal advocacy groups, experience an insider's view of the federal government, and enhance their understanding of nation-building and tribal self-governance.

    • key issues in your field
    •  the anticipated impact of your project on the field
    • how you propose to use your new skills in the service of your country
    • your professional goals in terms of the type of work and organization you hope to be employed in 10 years after completing the degree. 
    • If you have a promise of a job in your field upon your return home, include the name of that organization.

    3. The student provides her current CV.

    These awards were established by Harold T. Shapiro, former President of the University of Michigan and Vivian Shapiro, former faculty member at the University of Michigan. Dr. John Malik, a devoted Rackham alumnus in Physics, established an endowment for the same purpose. Jean Forrest earned her master’s degree from Rackham in 1976, and in gratitude for her education, established an endowed fund to support graduate students with financial need. All three awards are made through a single competition.

    The International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF) offers nine to twelve months of support to graduate students in the humanities and social sciences who are enrolled in doctoral programs in the United States and conducting dissertation research outside of the United States. IDRF promotes research that is situated in a specific discipline and geographical region but is also informed by interdisciplinary and cross-regional perspectives. Research topics may address all periods in history, but applicants should be alert to the broader implications of their research as it relates to contemporary issues and debates. Seventy-five fellowships are awarded annually.  Fellowship amounts vary depending on the research plan, with a per-fellowship average of $18,750. The fellowship includes participation in an interdisciplinary workshop upon the completion of IDRF-funded research.
