Funding Abstract:

In today’s Asia, as societies undergo increasingly rapid change, people in the region face common challenges and issues. These include maintaining sustainable ecosystems and livelihoods for marginalized groups, enhancing cross-cultural understanding and coexistence, and ensuring peace and security. Given this situation, the question is how we can come together to make the region a more safe and caring place for everyone.

Answering this question requires each of us who lives in Asia—along with our neighbors inside and outside our communities and countries—to take action to solve our common problems, based on open and flexible networks. Such efforts will forge partnerships for upcoming generations and enrich the future of Asia. Our hope is that people living in the Asia of the future will find joy and hope in their daily lives, develop together, and learn from each other’s wisdom and experiences. This program seeks project proposals that can present new lifestyles and innovative social models for the sake of future generations.

Project proposals for the program must correspond to one of the following areas:

(1) Fostering mutual understanding and social actors

(2) Enhancing sustainable communities

(3) Forging social systems to address local issues

Type of Funding:
Grant
Funding Comments:

Applicants are divided into the three categories, as listed below, based on the scale of the proposed project (for more details please refer to Section VI, "Project Requirements"). Each applicant must choose the appropriate grant type based on the content of the proposed project.

(1) Up to 2 million yen over 2 years: This grant type is recommended for projects involving participants

(2) 3 to 8 million yen over 2 years: This grant type is recommended for projects involving participants in in one country who intend to carry out innovative, challenging activities in a single location or community. 4 different countries who seek synergy by bringing together their respective knowledge and experiences.

(3) Special grant: 10 to 15 million yen over 2 years: This is a special framework for a limited number of projects that tackle important common challenges facing the region or world. Projects should be based on multinational network(s) adequate to the project, and results should contribute to solving a wider global issue.

Application includes:

  • Project title

Funding Restrictions:

Please note that proposals of the sort listed below will not be considered suitable for a project in this program:

(a) Activities with an excessively limited number or range of participants and/or beneficiaries (e.g. scholarships, members limited to one organization, etc.).

(b) Activities with no tangible objectives or results in mind (e.g. conducting an event or aiming for "networking" alone, with no results or other output besides a project report).

(c) Activities focused primarily on research. (Such proposals may be suitable for the Toyota Foundation’s Research Grant Program.)

(d) Ongoing activities (e.g. those by an NGO or charity organization that regularly issues materials) or proposals to use the grant to cover the running cost of an organization. Funding Abstract:

Since its establishment in 1975, the Toyota Foundation Research Grant Program has provided support to pioneering research carried out on the basis of flexible ideas not limited by conventional frameworks, reflecting the independent standpoint of a private foundation. In fiscal 2011, we are seeking ambitious projects with important social significance in line with our new theme, "Pursuing Knowledge to Build a Better Future," based on the "Toyota Foundation Vision 2010" unveiled last year.

Our program has consolidated previous frameworks corresponding to research areas into a total of three frameworks in two categories, A and B, in line with the stages and characteristics of each research project.

2. Value-creation research aimed at forging a new society

Category B: Individual Research: This project framework is aimed at promising researchers, particularly young researchers or those whose outside the establishment. We target projects from any field or topic provided that the researcher has adopted an innovative perspective and approach, and that the project can contribute positively to the researcher’s own future.

1. Practical research that contributes to addressing challenges facing society

Funding Abstract:

The National Science Foundation's Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences (BCS), Division of Social and Economic Sciences (SES), Division of Science Resources Statistics (SRS), and the SBE Office of Multidisciplinary Activities (SMA) award grants to doctoral students to improve the quality of dissertation research. These grants provide funds for items not normally available through the student's university.

Additionally, these grants allow doctoral students to undertake significant data-gathering projects and to conduct field research in settings away from their campus that would not otherwise be possible. Proposals are judged on the basis of their scientific merit, including the theoretical importance of the research question and the appropriateness of the proposed data and methodology to be used in addressing the question.

Funding Abstract:

in order to build long-term legacies through the scientific research we support, we have undertaken a strategic review of our program structure and developed four Research Areas (RAs):

  • Ecosystem Services
  • Climate Change
  • Oceans
  • Cultural Heritage

These RAs allow Earthwatch to focus support on critical ecological and cultural challenges encompassing the majority of threats to environmental sustainability. The RAs work together to support research, capacity building, education, and environmental action. Through these priorities, Earthwatch's supported research projects will have positive long-term impacts and will inform both local and global agendas.
Our project recruitment and review will now be determined by targets under each of the four RAs, along with our ability to adequately support the proposed research.

Type of Funding:

Funding Comments:

Earthwatch is currently not developing new research projects.

If we feel there is a strong enough potential match to our RAs and the likelihood of enough available support (i.e. funding sources and/or volunteers), we will keep your letter of inquiry on file and get in touch if an opportunity arises.

Application Process and Required Materials:

If you would like to be considered for Earthwatch support, please feel free to submit a short letter of inquiry (500 words or less) summarizing your proposed research project, along with your CV.

Applicants must be United States citizens or permanent residents.

Applicants must have completed their undergraduate education by the start of their project in Scandinavia.

Team projects are eligible, but each member must apply as an individual, submitting a separate, fully-documented application.

First priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received an ASF award. Only in exceptional cases will a third award be considered.

The ASF considers it desirable that all candidates have at least some ability in the language of the host country, even if it is not essential for the execution of the research plan.

Funding Abstract:

The CEW Scholarship Program for returning women students was established in 1970 to honor the academic performance and potential of women whose education has been interrupted and to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the admission of women to the University of Michigan. Thanks to the generosity of individuals and foundations, CEW has awarded over 1100 scholarships since 1970. CEW Scholarship Awards are invaluable, since they often mean the difference between completing a degree or not doing so for many students at the University of Michigan. Due to the generosity of donors, CEW was able to expand the program in 2008 to include additional scholarships for male and female students on the Ann Arbor campus.
