This scholarship provides $25,000 for a post-baccalaureate student in the water environment field.  The scholarship is for education related expenses such as room and board, tuition and books. The scholarship may not be used to cover stipends or wages.
Application Requirements and Criteria:
  1. Member of the Water Environment Federation.
  2. Completed application providing a summary of academic and practical experience in the environmental field.
  3. Official college/university transcripts.
  4. Letter of acceptance to a graduate program in the water environment field.
  5. Recommendations from three persons (at least one of these persons should be a member of the Water Environment Federation) who can attest to the applicant's academic and/or practical experience.
  6. A detailed statement of degree objectives as related to applicant's career goals and intent to work in the water environment field (750 words minimum; 1,000 words maximum). Statement must accompany the application.
  7. Recipients of the scholarship are expected to make a commitment to work in the water environment field for two years following completion of the degree.

In 1982, the Hydrology Section of AGU gained access to a portion of the income of the Robert E. Horton Fund for Hydrologic Research. This permitted the initiation of the Horton Research Grant, which was first awarded in 1983. The grant is in support of research projects in hydrology and water resources by Ph.D. candidates in institutions of higher education and is awarded annually. Its objective is to foster graduate student research leading to the completion of doctoral dissertations. ULI invites the participation of teams from accredited educational institutions in the United States and Canada. Teams must be made up of graduate students pursuing a graduate degree while fully enrolled for the entire period of the academic period during which the competition is conducted. Members of the jury; the competition advisers; all officials, current employees, and recent former employees of the Urban Land Institute (ULI); the employees, students, and immediate families of any of the aforementioned parties; and those who ULI deem to present conflicts of interest are ineligible to compete. All students from the previous year's finalist teams competitions are also ineligible.

ULI reserves the right to disqualify teams or to limit the number allowed to participate in the competition.

Teams can be disqualified if:

• they do not have the proper number or mix of students;
• they do not have a faculty adviser;
• they do not have the endorsement of their school/department/program head;
• their application is late; or
• they have not included all the necessary documentation with the application.

Funding Abstract: 

The ULI/Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition offers graduate-level students the opportunity to form their own multidisciplinary teams and engage in a challenging exercise in responsible land use. Student teams comprising at least three disciplines will have two weeks to devise a comprehensive design and development program for a real, large-scale site fraught with challenges and opportunities. Submissions will consist of boards that include drawings, site plans, tables, and market-feasible financial data. Please visit the competition archives to view previous submissions. 

The ULI/Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition is part of the Institute’s ongoing effort to raise interest among young people in creating better communities, improving development patterns, and increasing awareness of the need for multidisciplinary solutions to development and design challenges. This competition is an ideas competition; there is no expectation that any of the submitted schemes will be applied to the site. The winning team will receive $50,000 and the finalist teams $10,000 each.

The Academy Fellowship Program is an annual leadership training program for multi-ethnic students who want experience working on low-income and minority economic development. Fellows work independently and develop expertise in a project area with the direction of a Program Manager and the Academy Director.
Fellows conduct research, write reports and position papers, help organize community events, and interface regularly with multi-ethnic community, corporate, and government leaders. They write articles for various papers, represent the Greenlining Institute on TV and radio, and give presentations and testimony at policy hearings. Fellows also attend small group seminars on lobbying skills, public speaking, writing, media relations, and other personal development topics. Students also attend a Power Lunch series in which community, corporate, and government leaders are invited to meet informally with all Academy participants.

THE HOGAN/SMOGER ACCESS TO JUSTICE ESSAY CONTEST offers law students an opportunity to receive reward and recognition for expounding on whether and how the courts can be used to obtain justice.

For 40 years, the competition was known as the Roscoe Hogan Environmental Law Essay Contest, providing law students an opportunity to investigate and offer solutions to the multitude of injustices inflicted on the environment.   The contest was established in 1970 by the late Roscoe B. Hogan of Birmingham, Alabama, a prominent environmental lawyer.  With additional support from noted attorney Gerson Smoger, the contest was renamed and expanded beginning with the 2011 competition.

The Hogan/Smoger Access to Justice Essay Contest is a $5,000 cash award given to the author of the winning essay.  The 2011 topic is:  The Gulf Oil Spill: Who Are The Victims & How Do They Get Compensated?

Each entry must be submitted through a faculty adviser.  All entrants must submit an INTENT TO ENTER FORM (see link below) by January 31, 2011.   The deadline for the essay is March 31, 2011.  A panel of nationally renowned trial lawyers and law professors will judge the entries.

 

Application must consist of a hard copy (typed) and a computer disc containing the essay and the abstract. The pages of the hard copy must be firmly fastened together with a cover page which must contain the following information:

 

  1. Title of Essay (must appear at the top of the first page of the essay)
  2. Author’s Name
  3. Author’s year in law school and expected graduation date
  4. Law school name and address
  5. Date submitted for academic credit, if so submitted
  6. Author’s permanent and school addresses and phone numbers (IMPORTANT: indicate effective dates for all addresses)
  7. Sponsoring faculty member name and phone number

Students must submit an abstract (100 words or less) describing the paper. Please include name, address, law school and phone number on the abstract. The author’s name and law school must NOT appear anywhere in the essay other than on the cover page and abstract.

 

Essays must not exceed 50 pages of 8½ by 11-inch paper, double-spaced, excluding footnotes.
