The Mazamas Graduate Student Research Grants are intended to help graduate students cover travel and per diem costs of conducting master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation research. 

 

 

The Mazamas Research Committee evaluates Graduate Student Research Grant proposals using the following criteria:

1. Relationship to Mazamas’ goals of conserving and increasing the understanding of mountain environments (particularly relating to the Pacific Northwest), and enhancing the enjoyment and safety of mountain recreation.

2. Scientific merit as judged by the originality; reasonableness; significance in relation to previous work on this subject; scientifically sound methods; adequate assessment techniques; and potential significance of the project’s goals and methods.

3. Likelihood of success at meeting the scientific objectives and communicating project results to appropriate audiences.

4. Potential for compounded benefits, such as student career advancement and other forms of resource development, support for and impact on community and governmental organizations, and proposals for new initiatives that may attract additional funding.

5. Reasonableness of the budget request.

6. Quality of proposal presentation, including readability, organization, and satisfaction of the requirements listed under “Conditions of Awards” and “Application Procedure.”

Application should include:

 

 

1. A cover page with the project title, applicant’s name, affiliation, mailing address, and other contact information (phone, fax, e-mail). Please indicate that you are applying for a Graduate Student Grant.

 

2. A 250-word abstract of the proposed project.

 

3. A description of the proposed project including its objectives, justification, and likely practical impact, background, methodology, expected results, and planned means of disseminating the results. Maximum length of this description is not to exceed 7 (seven) pages. Use #12 font, double spaced.

 

4. An itemized budget for the travel and per diem funds requested, with appropriate justification for each item as it relates to the scope of the project.

 

5. A copy of the student’s resume (1-4 pages).

 

6. A letter of recommendation from the applicant’s thesis or dissertation advisor. This letter may be attached to the proposal or mailed separately. If mailed separately, please indicate who is sending it.

The Natural Hazards Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder and the Public Entity Risk Institute with support from from the National Science Foundation and Swiss Re established a program in 2004 that awards dissertation fellowships for work in all aspects of natural and human-made hazards, risk and disasters in all disciplines. The Conservation Leadership Programme is offering Future Conservationist Awards of up to $12,500 to high potential teams who aim to develop their skills through practical conservation projects. These awards are highly competitive and winners are selected from amongst the best quality applications.

Successful applicants will: 1.) Develop the knowledge, skills and experience of team members; 2.) Implement a focused, high-priority conservation project combining research and action; 3.) Contribute to the long-term success of local conservation efforts; and 4.) Contribute to the education and awareness of local stakeholders.

As part of the award, one member from each team is selected to represent their project at an international training course presented by the CLP. The course is aimed at developing innovative project management, education, facilitation and communication skills.

Additionally, winning teams are able to access expertise from within each of the four conservation partner organisations and via our past winners alumni network. Programme staff are also available to help with the implementation of projects, including guidance required during the planning and team training stages.

Since its inception in 2000, the Rose Fellowship has achieved dramatic results in neighborhoods across the country. The 29 Rose Fellows sponsored to date have used their design and organizational skills to help their host organizations create or preserve over 4,400 sustainable, affordable homes and 43 much-needed community facilities for low-income people in underserved communities.

Eligible applicants for Hertz Fellowships must be students of the applied physical, biological and engineering sciences who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America, and who are willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the United States in time of national emergency (see our Moral Commitment section).

Funding Abstract: 

Since 1963, the Fannie and John Hertz Foundation has awarded over 1,000 doctoral fellowships with the goal of supporting the early stage research endeavors of applied physical, biological, and engineering science students who possess the potential to change our world for the better by solving difficult, real-world problems. The Graduate Fellowship Award is based on merit (not need) and consists of a cost-of-education allowance and a personal-support stipend.

Fellowship
Funding Comments: 

Successful applicants have the choice of two Fellowship options:

Option 1- Five- Year Hertz

  • $31,000/ 9-month personal stipend*
  • Full tuition equivalent
  • Renewable for up to 5 years

Option 2 - Five-Year Coordinated
Hertz Period - Two Years

  • $36,000/ 9-month personal stipend*
  • Full tuition equivalent

Other Fellowship Period - Up to Three Years

  • $3,500/ year supplemental stipend* from Hertz
  • Requires Awardee to accept a 3-year Fellowship from another source

The Five-Year Hertz Fellowship award (Option 1) is renewable annually (upon a showing of satisfactory progress toward receipt of the Ph.D. degree) for a total Fellowship tenure of no more than five years.

* $5,000/ year additional stipend for Fellows with dependent children.

Fellows must attend one of the Foundation's tenable schools, or must petition the Foundation to include a school that he/she desires to attend.
