The program is open to full-time doctoral students in the humanities and social sciences -- regardless of citizenship -- enrolled in doctoral programs in the United States. Applicants must complete all Ph.D. requirements except on-site research by the time the fellowship begins or by December, whichever comes first.

Funding Abstract: 

Fellowships will provide support for nine to twelve months of dissertation research. Individual awards will be approximately $20,000. No awards will be made for proposals requiring less than nine months of on-site research. The IDRF fellowship must be held for a single continuous period.

The Institute of International Education (IIE), on behalf of the U.S. State Department, administers the Student Fulbright Program, which makes fellowships available to over 1,500 U.S. students annually to study, conduct research, teach English or train in the creative arts in more than 155 countries worldwide. At U-M this competition is administered by the International Institute.

Students should also attend an Information Session (see above).  After attending an Information Session, students should meet individually with a Fulbright Program Advisor:

This internship provided Siddharth Nag an opportunity to practice and participate in environmental legal actions.  He drafted legal documents for current actions, preformed legal research, and wrote legal memorandums for internal staff use.

Michigan Department of Natural Resources

Conservation programs targeted at private lands demand a great deal of effort at building relationships with landowners.  It can be a long process and not something well suited for a summer intern.  But, as an intern with Michiganí¢â‚¬â„¢s Department of Resources, Landowner Incentive Program (LIP), Andrew Fotinos was fortunate to have the opportunity to í¢â‚¬Ëœborrowí¢â‚¬â„¢ the credibility of his supervisor and work with landowners with whom he had already established relationships.
