Funding Abstract: 

The Debt Management Awards were established by anonymous donors to encourage Rackham doctoral students to pursue public interest careers upon completing their graduate degrees. This award is designed to lighten the financial burden for students with sizeable loan debt who will pursue public interest careers.

Students must be nominated by their program for this award. Participating programs may nominate no more than 3 students. Please contact your program regarding their nomination procedures.

To nominate a student for this award, graduate programs must complete an online nomination form and submit:

  • Student's personal statement including a brief statement of their past community service work and intent to pursue a public service career in the United States upon graduation;
  • Letter of recommendation from the nominee's graduate program chair or faculty advisor regarding their academic progress and promise of achievement;
  • Statement regarding the student's current means of support (including source, amount and length of support) and living expenses;
  • Amount of student loans, subsidized and unsubsidized, and amount of yearly interest on unsubsidized student loans;
  • A current curriculum vitae (c.v.)

Funding Abstract: 

The Rackham Graduate Student Emergency Fund is intended to help meet the financial needs of Rackham graduate students who encounter an emergency situation or one-time, unusual, or unforeseen expenses during their degree program. Situations eligible for funding include such events as:

  • Personal or family medical, dental or mental health emergencies
  • Major accidents and events such as fire and natural disasters
  • Expenses related to the illness or death of an immediate relative

  1. Brief statement describing the emergency situation or one-time, unusual or unforeseen expense and the total dollar amount of emergency funds being requested.

  3. Letter of recommendation of no more than two pages (1,500 words) from either the graduate chair or the department chair of the student's program.

  • Have not received another KCP Fellowship award for the same degree level (master's or doctorate).
  • Not currently in default status on any guaranteed student loan and/or a KCP Loan.
  • A citizen of the United States.
  • A resident of the State of Michigan who meets the University of Michigan's requirements for residency.
  • Planning and able to teach in postsecondary education.

Master's KCP Future Faculty Fellows agree to pursue and obtain a master's degree within four (4) years of receiving this fellowship award. Fellows must either pursue a doctoral degree at a postsecondary educational institution within one (1) year after attaining their master's degree or begin a teaching or administrative career in a 2- or 4-year postsecondary institution and continue this employment for a minimum of three (3) years. Doctoral KCP Future Faculty Fellows agree to pursue and obtain a doctoral degree within eight (8) years of beginning doctoral study. Fellows must begin a teaching or administrative career at a postsecondary educational institution within one (1) year after attaining their doctoral degree, and remain in employment at a postsecondary institution for a period of not less than three (3) years.

The King-Chavez-Parks Future Faculty Fellowship Program is funded by the State of Michigan and is intended to increase the pool of traditionally underrepresented candidates pursuing faculty teaching careers in postsecondary education. The Conservation and Research Foundation funds small grants, typically between $500 and $5000 per proposal. While projects vary from year to year, we have provided both base institutional support and education and research grants focused on five broad areas: Limiting population growth, Biodiversity protection, Law and the environment, Agriculture conservation, Pollution and energy solutions. In addition, the Foundation funds general ecological research and environmental education that doesn’t necessarily fit into one of these categories.

AAIA has a long history of providing scholarships to college students, awarding our first scholarship in 1948. We currently have eight scholarship programs for graduate and undergraduate students.
