The Rackham Graduate School announces 2011 Rackham International Research Awards (RIRA) to support terminal master's and doctoral students conducting degree-related research outside the United States and Puerto Rico. Terminal Master's students are those in programs which do not offer a Ph.D. degree, such as an M.F.A.

It is expected that up to thirty-five awards will be made, averaging about $7,000 each. The maximum award amount is $8,000. Funding will be available for use by mid-May 2011.

Students with external research fellowship support may apply, but must demonstrate convincing need for additional funding.

Application Process and Required Materials: 

Students must complete the Rackham International Research Awards application and submit one copy of:

  • A statement of no more than three 12-font double-spaced pages, written in a language for non-specialists, that describes the proposed research and explains its significance and feasibility. Applicants should also discuss any language skills they may need to conduct the proposed research.
  • A full budget and timetable discussion that presents anticipated costs and shows all other sources of support, pending and confirmed, for the proposed period of research.
  • A letter of no more than two pages from the student's principal advisor (chair of the dissertation committee, if the student has an approved dissertation proposal). The writer should address the student's achievement and promise, previous sources of support, and any obstacles facing the student in securing external or internal funding for research abroad. The letter should be submitted electronically as part of the online application.
  • An unofficial copy of the University of Michigan graduate academic record (transcript).
  • A resume/curriculum vitae.

Funding Abstract: 

The Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) Multi-Country Fellowship Program supports advanced regional or trans-regional research in the humanities, social sciences, or allied natural sciences for U.S. master's students, doctoral candidates, and scholars who have already earned their Ph.D. Preference will be given to candidates examining comparative and/or cross-regional research. Applicants are eligible to apply as individuals or in teams.

Scholars must carry out research in two or more countries outside the United States, at least one of which hosts a participating American overseas research center. Approximately ten awards of up to $12,000 each will be given in the doctoral candidate/post-doctoral scholar competition. Approximately four awards of up to $8,000 each will be given in the master's student competition.

  1. Application Form
  2. Project Description - On a separate sheet of paper, in 1500 words or less, please describe the nature of your proposed project and your competence to carry out the required research. State your research question and the methods and procedures you will use to conduct your research. Give the reasons why your project requires your presence in the countries you indicated and indicate the facilities (e.g., libraries, museums, archives, field sites) that you plan to use while conducting your research. What relationship will you have with the host-country ORC(s)? Finally, indicate the extent to which you have investigated other funding sources. Please note that those judging your application may not be specialists in your field.
  3. Project Bibliography/Literature Review - 1 page maximum, additional pages will not be submitted to the readers for review.
  4. Two (2) separate letters of recommendation- Ph.D candidates must have one letter from academic advisor with a signed Academic Advisor Form.
  5. Curriculum Vitae - 3 pages maximum, additional pages will not be submitted to the readers for review.
  6. Graduate Transcripts - Master's Students and Ph.D candidates only

Smith Scholarship Program Award will not be forfeited if the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan is notified in advance of such transfer to an eligible institution.

The United States Department of State is pleased to announce the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program for overseas intensive summer language institutes in thirteen critical need foreign languages. NCR-SARE funds Graduate Student grants in Sustainable Agriculture for projects that address sustainable agriculture issues and are part of the student's degree program. NCR-SARE instituted the Graduate Student grant program in 2002 for officially registered graduate students (Masters and Ph.D.) enrolled at accredited colleges or universities. Projects must benefit agriculture in the North Central Region. NCR-SARE strengthens rural communities, increases farmer/rancher profitability, and improves the environment by supporting research and education.

The North Central Region consists of: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

A student is allowed to receive only one NCR-SARE Graduate Student grant during her or his student career. The student must be officially registered as a graduate student or resident (according to his or her institution’s requirements) at the time the project begins.

The funding level for 2011 is dependent upon appropriations from Congress and decisions by the NCR-SARE Administrative Council, but we anticipate that roughly $150,000 will be available to fund about 15 grant projects. Individual grants, which will not exceed $10,000 for the total grant period, will be available for projects lasting up to three years (36 months). In 2010, 15 projects were selected for funding with an average grant size of $9763 and durations ranging from 4 to 36 months.

Application Process and Required Materials: 

The five main components of your proposal are:

  • Cover Page, one page maximum, including personal and advisor contact information, project title, start date, and duration, and total budget request;
  • Abstract, one half page maximum;
  • Plan of Work, three pages maximum, including project title, short- and long-term outcomes, background, lit review, method, outputs, and criteria for evaluation;
  • Budget, one page maximum, broken down into major categories; and
  • Appendices, outlined in application information packet.

Eight stapled paper copies of the proposal and cover letter (if a cover letter is included; cover letters are not required) must be received in the NCR-SARE office in Lincoln, Nebraska before 4:30 p.m. CST.

Submit one electronic copy of the proposal in a word processing format as an e-mail attachment sent to ncrsare@unl.edu or on a diskette included with the paper copies of your proposal.
