The funding for this fellowship program is provided by the Department of State, Bureau of Intelligence and Research, Office of Outreach Title VIII Program for Research and Training on Eastern Europe and Eurasia (Independent States of the Former Soviet Union). One of the goals of the Title VIII program is to support and sustain American expertise on the countries of Eastern Europe and Eurasia. This program also works to support outreach; build relationships between the policy community and the academic community; help build national capability by engaging diverse experts in the exploration of new ideas and perspectives; and create new knowledge and research.

The fellow's home institution is expected to make a cost-sharing contribution of no less than 10 percent of the fellowship award; in exceptional circumstances, this condition may be waived. Travel grants are available only to selected fellows and require additional application materials (e.g. travel budget) that must be approved before travel grants are awarded.

Fellows will not be able to hold two fellowships simultaneously if the Awards Terms & Conditions are contradictory. In addition, fellows may not receive more than a combined total of $30,000 throughout the tenure of the award (one academic year).

The AAG provides support for doctoral dissertation research in the form of small grants of approximately $500 to PhD candidates of any geographic specialty. AAG Dissertation Research Grants are supported by the AAG and also in part with the following funds:  The Robert D. Hodgson Memorial Ph.D. Dissertation Fund, which honors an accomplished geographer who capped his long career with ten years of distinguished service as the geographer in the U.S. Department of State. As an internationally recognized expert on geographic aspects of the law of the sea and maritime boundaries, Dr. Hodgson believed that broader understanding of geographic principles would reduce international conflicts. ;  the Paul Vouras Fund, established by a generous gift from Dr. Vouras, who taught at William Paterson College in Wayne, New Jersey, until 1990. The fund supports doctoral dissertation research in geography with preference to minority student applications; and the Otis Paul Starkey Fund, honoring an officer of the American Society of Professional Geographers who also taught at the University of Indiana at Bloomington for years, established to support research devoted to regional study or significant problem areas in the United States or its possessions.  Applicants do not need to indicate which of these funds are most relevant to their proposed dissertation, nor must their research conform to only these subject areas.

Criteria: Proposals should demonstrate high standards of scholarship. The selection committee will observe the purposes and preferences noted above when evaluating proposals. The committee represents a broad spectrum of geographical specialties, and cannot be expected to be familiar with the jargon of all geographical topics. Awards rarely exceed $500. Awards may not be made in years when funds are insufficient or proposals are not suitable.

ULI invites the participation of teams from accredited educational institutions in the United States and Canada. Teams must be made up of graduate students pursuing a graduate degree while fully enrolled for the entire period of the academic period during which the competition is conducted. Members of the jury; the competition advisers; all officials, current employees, and recent former employees of the Urban Land Institute (ULI); the employees, students, and immediate families of any of the aforementioned parties; and those who ULI deem to present conflicts of interest are ineligible to compete. All students from the previous year's finalist teams competitions are also ineligible.

ULI reserves the right to disqualify teams or to limit the number allowed to participate in the competition.

Teams can be disqualified if:

Funding Abstract: 

The ULI/Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition offers graduate-level students the opportunity to form their own multidisciplinary teams and engage in a challenging exercise in responsible land use. Student teams comprising at least three disciplines will have two weeks to devise a comprehensive design and development program for a real, large-scale site fraught with challenges and opportunities. Submissions will consist of boards that include drawings, site plans, tables, and market-feasible financial data. Please visit the competition archives to view previous submissions. 

The ULI/Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition is part of the Institute’s ongoing effort to raise interest among young people in creating better communities, improving development patterns, and increasing awareness of the need for multidisciplinary solutions to development and design challenges. This competition is an ideas competition; there is no expectation that any of the submitted schemes will be applied to the site. The winning team will receive $50,000 and the finalist teams $10,000 each.
