Dissertation fellowships are available to women who will complete their dissertation writing between July 1 and June 30. Degree conferral must be between April 1 and September 15. To qualify, applicants must have completed all course work, passed all required preliminary examinations, and received approval for their research proposal or plan by Nov. 15. Students holding any fellowship for writing a dissertation in the year prior to the AAUW fellowship year are not eligible. Open to applicants in all fields of study. Scholars engaged in science, technology, engineering and math and also researching gender issues are especially encouraged to apply. American Fellowship candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States as of November 15.

Application form, narrative autobiography, statement of Project, transcript (1 official and 2 copies), CV, institution Certification form, 3 letters of recommendation, office record form, filing fee.
The AAUW Educational Foundation American Fellowship stipend must be larger than any other single fellowship or grant received during the year and must be acknowledged as the major award. Acceptance of any concurrent funds of a lesser amount than the Foundation award requires prior approval of the Foundation.
Fellowships DO NOT fund:
Research Assistants, laboratory supplies & equipment, publication costs, tuition for additional coursework, repayment of loans or other personal obligations, extended field research.
