Students holding any fellowship for writing a dissertation in the year prior to the AAUW fellowship year are not eligible. Open to applicants in all fields of study. The National Science Foundation's Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences (BCS), Division of Social and Economic Sciences (SES), Division of Science Resources Statistics (SRS), and the SBE Office of Multidisciplinary Activities (SMA) award grants to doctoral students to improve the quality of dissertation research. These grants provide funds for items not normally available through the student's university.

Additionally, these grants allow doctoral students to undertake significant data-gathering projects and to conduct field research in settings away from their campus that would not otherwise be possible. Proposals are judged on the basis of their scientific merit, including the theoretical importance of the research question and the appropriateness of the proposed data and methodology to be used in addressing the question.

These RAs allow Earthwatch to focus support on critical ecological and cultural challenges encompassing the majority of threats to environmental sustainability. The TREE Fund research priority areas are derived from the Revised National Research and Technology Transfer Agenda for Urban and Community Forestry. Proposals in the following priority areas are more likely to be funded, but all proposals will be considered:

• Root and Soil Management: Many urban tree problems originate below ground. Promoting root development, protecting roots from injury, and conflicts with infrastructure are issues that arborists encounter regularly. Managing roots includes soil management.

• Planting and Establishment: Survival and vigorous growth of trees after planting is of concern to arborists and the entire green industry. Arborists are increasingly dealing with problems that originate in, or could be avoided by the planting process.

• Plant Health Care: Healthy plants have more effective defense systems and are better able to resist pests. Complete understanding of plant health may lead to new pest control strategies.

• Risk Assessment and Worker Safety: Safety is a major concern. It can be a life-or-death issue to workers and the public. Detection of defects, and knowing how they develop, are important. Improved equipment and work practices are needed.

The CEW Scholarship Program for returning women students was established in 1970 to honor the academic performance and potential of women whose education has been interrupted and to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the admission of women to the University of Michigan. Thanks to the generosity of individuals and foundations, CEW has awarded over 1100 scholarships since 1970. CEW Scholarship Awards are invaluable, since they often mean the difference between completing a degree or not doing so for many students at the University of Michigan. Due to the generosity of donors, CEW was able to expand the program in 2008 to include additional scholarships for male and female students on the Ann Arbor campus.

Stipends and payments come from the Foundation for Community Association Research and are sent to recipients in three equal payments.

  • First: upon acceptance of fellowship & certification of enrolled in appropriate program.
  • Second: at the beginning of the second term upon confirmation of satisfactory progress. Must be used for books, tuition, or other expenses for graduate education.
  • Third: paid upon completion of the project and provision of a copy of the final project to the Foundation.

The first comes upon acceptance of the fellowship and his or her academic institution's certification that the student is both currently enrolled in the appropriate graduate program, and is authorized to accept a Hanke Fellowship.

The second installment of the stipend will be paid at the beginning of the second academic term following the first payment, upon confirmation of satisfactory progress by the Hanke Fellow's academic or project advisor. The funds must be used for tuition, books, or other expenses of the Fellow's graduate education, as documented by receipts submitted to the Foundation.

The final installment of the stipend will be paid upon completion of the project. The Hanke Fellow will also be obligated to provide to the Foundation a copy of the final project, in accordance with the Fellow's application. The Foundation may publish the project if it is deemed appropriate.
