Beyond Cap and Trade: The Transformative Impact of Climate Change on Land Conservation in the U.S.
Two School of Natural Resources and Environment alumni, Sara Barth and Mark Zankel, will give an address titled: Beyond Cap and Trade: The Transformative Impact of Climate Change on Land Conservation in the U.S. A pizza lunch will be served during the talk.
Overview of their discussion: From east to west -- private to public lands -- the initial impacts of climate change are evident in many ecosystems across the U.S. Less obvious is the fact that climate change is going to force a fundamental transformation in the way policy-makers, land managers, scientists and advocates approach land conservation. Climate change brings a host of unprecedented and sweeping threats even to landscapes once thought "protected." The solutions to these threats require radically different ways of thinking, and a re-examination of some of our most sacrosanct beliefs; in many cases, the answers remain unknown.
About Sara and Mark: Sara Barth (M.S., SNRE, 1994) is regional director of The Wilderness Society's California/Nevada Region. Mark Zankel (M.S., SNRE, 1994) is deputy director for The Nature Conservancy's New Hampshire Chapter. They will share their bicoastal experiences and perspectives on land conservation from the field. Are conservationists responding strategically and effectively to these changing times? How are the politics of land conservation shifting because of climate change? What are some of the innovative approaches being tested to help natural systems build resilience and adapt to climate change? What are some of the policy tools that will be needed to provide meaningful protection to lands under a changing climate scenario?
Directly following the talk from 3-5 p.m. in the Dana Ford Commons, SNRE will host a Career Fair. For more information and registration, visit http://sitemaker.umich.edu/snre-career-fair/home to register.
