Pouring on the publicity

A 2011 master’s project has led to a local brewery installing nearly $250,000 in energy efficiencies, including a 144-panel roof solar array to provide energy to the brewing process. The efforts of the students, and the ongoing work of one in particular, were highlighted in a recent news report from WJBK-TV Fox 2.

The Corner Brewery’s “Green Brewery Project” includes solar-thermal, photovoltaic and geo-thermal technologies along with new windows, awnings and energy-efficient chiller equipment. It is expected to provide almost all of the brewery’s hot water needs and up to 15 percent of its electricity, while knocking $20,000 each year off energy bills.

The Ypsilanti, Mich.-based Corner Brewery is part of the Arbor Brewing Company (ABC),  owned by Matt and Rene Greff. ABC was the client for the 2011 master’s project featuring students Jazmine Bennett, Jarrett Diamond, Gary Fischer and Kirby Smithson. The group devised ways to make the Corner Brewery more energy efficient and sustainable.

The recent news video features Diamond, who is the brewery's sustainability consultant.

Corner Brewery will host an event Aug. 29 to celebrate the improvements. The event is from 5-7 p.m. at 720 Norris St., Ypsilanti.
