National climate-change study published; dean, faculty were authors
July 26, 2010
SNRE Dean Rosina M. Bierbaum and Professors Andy Hoffman, Maria Carmen Lemos and Ted Parsons contributed to a series of recently published national reports on climate change.
The National Research Council of the National Academies of Science produced the series, called America's Climate Choices, at the request of Congress.
Dean Bierbaum was on the panel of 17 scientists that wrote "Informing an Effective Response to Climate Change," which was published on July 22. "Demand for information to support climate-related decisions [but] the nation lacks comprehensive, robust, and credible information systems to inform climate choices and evaluate their effectiveness," the report states. The panel calls for a national climate-monitoring service, a system for greenhouse-gas monitoring and management, clear consumer information about energy use, and federal support for collection and analysis of international climate-change information.
Professors Lemos and Parsons contributed to "Advancing the Science of Climate Change,í¢â‚¬ and Professor Hoffman was on the panel for a report called "Limiting the Magnitude of Future Climate Change;" both reports were published in May along with a third report on adapting to climate change.
A final report, not yet published, will combine the four individual reports.
