LA 100 Year Centennial
University of Michigan Landscape Architecture Centennial Celebration
LA Centennial Painting Unveiling: U-M's Landscape Architecture program celebrated its 100th anniversary recently with alumni, current students and past and present faculty. SNRE, which houses the program, hosted the event and commissioned a commemorative painting from William J. Johnson (center), an emeritus Landscape Architecture professor and former SNRE dean. Joining him at the Michigan Union for the painting’s unveiling were Provost Teresa Sullivan (left) and SNRE Dean Rosina Bierbaum.
Thank you, everyone!
The Landscape Architecture Centennial Celebration was a great success. Alumni from around the world came to share memories and help the program celebrate 100 years of leadership and innovation. Many also contributed material to the Alumni Retrospective, held Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Hatcher Graduate Library. The events—from panel discussions and afternoon tours to evening receptions—were very well attended. The Oct. 9-10 events were capped with a gala dinner in the Michigan Union.
At that dinner, William J. Johnson, emeritus Landscape Architecture professor and former dean of the School of Natural Resources and Environment, delivered the keynote speech. During it, he officially donated to the school a painting he made of the program’s various campus homes to commemorate the event.
As part of the event, the school began the LA Centennial Challenge. Its goal is to raise existing funds in the LA fellowship endowment to $1 million; doing so will provide a $5,000 fellowship award to 10 LA students annually. The school welcomes gifts of any scale to existing or new funds and is pleased to speak with you about multi-year pledges of support, creating a new endowed fund in honor of a loved one or colleague, or planned giving options. We hope you’ll join the Challenge! For more information, please contact Kevin Merrill at merrillk@umich.edu or 734.936.2557.
