SNRE's own Sustainability Without Borders develops partnership with NGO in Liberia, More Than Me

This past summer, a group of University of Michigan graduate students from the College of Engineering and the School of Natural Resources and Environment traveled to Liberia, West Africa as members of the student organization Sustainability Without Borders.  Sustainability Without Borders (SWB) is an interdisciplinary organization whose objective is to create a network of sustainability practitioners who develop and implement sustainability projects in rural areas of developing countries.

SNRE (Erb) students launch reusable takeout container program at University Club

Go Blue Box, a student-initiated reusable takeout container program, began its pilot phase at the University Club restaurant in the Michigan Union Nov. 5. The program aims to help the university reach its waste-reduction goals by offering customers a reusable alternative to the disposable containers that are used only once before they are thrown away.

In September 2012, students at the SNRE Pig Roast & Produce raised $1,694.83 to donate to the organization of their choice. Organizations were nominated and chosen by popular vote at this student-organized event. The Allen Creek Greenway Conservancy, a grassroots effort to build a bike and pedestrian path through the heart of Ann Arbor along the historic alignment of Allen Creek, was this year’s recipient.

Award-winning author Thomas Hager visits SNRE

Award-winning author Thomas Hager, author of "Alchemy of Air," will be visiting SNRE Nov. 19 to talk about balancing the dangers of widespread pollution against the dangers of widespread famine. Join him to delve into a discussion about how we approach this problem in a way that provides enough food for the world, but limits damage from pollution.

The research explores “food deserts,” defined as poor access to safe, healthy and nutritious food. It also will examine urban agriculture, and how volunteer groups such as the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network and its D-Town Farm in Detroit are contributing to the public dialogue about food security and food justice.

Taylor leads research team examining 'food security' across Michigan

Researchers at the University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and Environment are leading a five-year, $4 million study of disparities in access to healthy food across the state. The researchers will interview residents and study data in 18 small to mid-sized cities to better understand the factors affecting "food security," a socioeconomic term that defines easy access to safe and healthy food.

Professor Andy Hoffman

Hoffman named one of 'World's 50 Best Business School Professors'

SNRE Professor Andy Hoffman has been chosen as of the World’s 50 Best Business School Professors by Poets & Quants. Hoffman has a joint appointment with SNRE and the Stephen M. Ross School of Business. He also serves as director of the Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise. He came to the University of Michigan in September 2004. The rankings were announced this week. This is how Poets&Quants describes the survey and its results:

Bee Movie Night

Your ever-vigilant StudGov first year reps are hosting a zero-waste, zero-money movie night in Dana 1040! This movie is presented in association with the new student beekeeping group "UMBees."

We'll be showing Queen of the Sun (the coolest honeybee documentary around) promptly at 7:30 pm, with some FUN mingling beefore and after. Bring your favorite bee-themed snack (open to interpretation).

Andrea Urbiel Goldner

Alumna Andrea Urbiel Goldner receives Fulbright Scholar award

More Fulbright grants were awarded to students from U-M than from any other U.S. institution for the 2012-13 academic year — the sixth time in the past eight years the university has held the honor, officials said today, including Andrea Urbiel Goldner (B.S. '98), who also teaches at SNRE. A U-M record 40 students received the grants, allowing them to participate in one of the most competitive and prestigious programs in the world. They will travel to 24 countries to do research, study or teach English for six to 12 months.

Today's students need to understand how companies evaluate and apply sustainability data to make decisions that affect the planet. ӬӬWith that in mind, the University of Michigan's Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise, together with the World Environment Center, announces a partnership for graduate MBA/MS students to get involved in planning and implementing sustainable development initiatives along with leading global companies.
