Fall 2010 Course - NRE 501 section 098 "Ecological Design of Human-Dominated Landscapes"
Instructor: Prof. Joan Nassauer
Lecture - Wednesday 6:30PM - 9:00PM
Description:
The overarching goal of this course is to build students' ability to think knowledgeably, critically, and creatively about environmental effects of landscape design, planning, and management. í‚ It emphasizes the link between environmental science knowledge and design/planning/management choices.í‚ í‚ The course will include ecological design literature addressing both metropolitan and agricultural landscapes, since conceptual issues of environmental performance and coupled human systems are similar in both settings. Starting from conceptual frameworks in landscape ecology, students will review primary literature about ecological performance in metropolitan and rural landscapes, and compare it with ecological design conclusions as implied by recent built work or as offered as criteria for design, planning, and management.
