Heidelberg Installation Studio

NRE 501.018

Instructor: Prof. Beth Diamond

Meets: TTh 1:30-4:30PM

Course Description:

In this large-scale sculpture studio you will be proposing and then constructing found object installations for the Heidelberg Project that are responsive to their unique urban context. According to Tyree Guyton's manifesto, creative expression is to be utilized as a medium for change. The studio will bring theory-into-practice by examining the physical and sociological impact of art interventions as a catalyst for energizing public space and then executing a series of built works that are deeply grounded in the history and cultural layers of the city. Lectures and discussions will cover an examination of the socio-political context of Detroit's Black Bottom neighborhood where the Heidelberg Project resides and a wide-range of installation strategies that attempt to engage public discourse and participation. Design critique will focus on effective visual communication, scale, construction, materiality, legibility and the translation of intended concepts into form and space.

Please note that this course will fulfill one of the MLAí¢â‚¬â„¢s NRE 791 studio requirement.
