Sustainability at the Water-Energy Nexus

Job ID: 22785
Job Title: PROFESSOR
Job/Career Family: Instructional - Regular

Job Description and Responsibilities:
The University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources and the Environment (SNRE) is seeking a tenured faculty member to contribute to interdisciplinary research and teaching which addresses sustainability at the energy-water nexus. Energy and water are the most critical resource challenges facing both developed and developing countries. Energy systems face declining availability of fossil fuels, problematic carbon emissions, and burgeoning demand. At the same time water supply, demand and quality already pose urgent problems at global, regional and local levels; especially when considering the uncertain impacts of climate change upon existing hydrologic resources. Solutions to this complex set of challenges must recognize the highly interdependent nature of water resources and energy production systems. A sustainable future will require the integration of ecologically sensitive water management with the realities of energy demand and available energy production technologies.

SNRE's overarching objective is to help bridge fields of study within SNRE, including Aquatic Sciences and Sustainable Systems, as well as to interact with other academic units across the University. In particular, we expect that the chosen candidate will play an active role in the new Engineering Sustainable Systems Dual Master’s Degree Program between the College of Engineering and the School of Natural Resources and Environment. Responsibilities include the development and delivery of courses related to energy and water issues, and relevant to the Sustainable Systems field of study and related dual masters’ degree programs with the College of Engineering (MS NRE/MSE) and the Ross School of Business (MS NRE/MBA). While teaching responsibilities are primarily at the Masters level, undergraduate and/or doctoral teaching is encouraged. Courses will be determined in consultation with the Dean, and the Sustainable Systems and Aquatic Sciences faculty. In addition, responsibilities include supervision of thesis and dissertation work as well as student advising.

Job Requirements:
We seek a senior candidate who can develop and lead expanded research initiatives in the emerging area of the energy-water nexus. A PhD is required in a relevant engineering, environmental science, economics, ecological management, or policy field. The candidate will have an exemplary research portfolio and a demonstrated ability to lead, develop funding, and publish interdisciplinary research addressing water and energy problems. A technical background in engineering is desirable but not a requirement. Ideal candidates will have integrating analytical capabilities, and may have specific interests in any relevant area such as: water supply systems, water policy formation and implementation, life cycle modeling, energy production systems, sustainable development, biofuels production, ecological risk analysis, or energy/water-economics. Demonstrated ability to teach interdisciplinary courses with students from SNRE and other programs such as engineering, business and policy is expected.

How to Apply:
Applicants should submit the following: curriculum vitae; statement of research and teaching interests; digital reprints of three key publications; and the names and addresses of at least three references. The position will remain open until filled, with application review beginning October 1, 2008. Inquiries should be addressed to: Mindy Lowe, Energy-Water Search Committee, School of Natural Resources and Environment University of Michigan, 440 Church St., Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1041 or via email: lowem@umich.edu.

The University of Michigan is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
