Funding Abstract:

For graduate study or research abroad in academic fields and for professional training in the creative and performing arts. Purpose is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the US and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills.
Applicants will be considered for all awards to the country of application that are appropriate to the applicant's qualifications and objectives, and for which the applicant is eligible. There is a single application form for all grants described below:
Fulbright Full Grants
These grants generally provide round-trip transportation; language or orientation courses, where appropriate; tuition, in some cases; book and research allowances; maintenance for the academic year, based on living costs in the host country; and supplemental health and accident insurance.
Fulbright Travel Grants
Travel grants are available only to Germany, Hungary, or Italy. Travel grants provide roundtrip transportation and are available to supplement an award from a non-IIE fellowship that does not provide funds for travel, or to supplement a student's own funds for study.
Foreign and Private Grants

Teaching Assistantships
Opportunities are available in Argentina, Belgium/Luxembourg, Chile, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Indonesia, Korea, Romania, Taiwan, and Turkey.

These grants generally provide round-trip transportation; book and research allowances; maintenance for the academic year, based on living costs in the host country; supplemental health and accident insurance; tuition, in some cases; and language or orientation courses, where appropriate. Comprehensive Fulbright grants are payable in local currency or U.S. dollars, depending on the country of assignment.

Applicant Eligibility Comments:

* U.S. citizen at the time of application (permanent residents are not eligible).
* Preference will be given to applicants whose higher education was received primarily at educational institutions in the United States.
* Preference will usually be given to candidates who have not resided or studied in the country to which they are applying for more than six months. Duty abroad in the Armed Forces of the United States is not considered disqualifying in the meaning of this section.

* Applicants must hold a B.A. degree or the equivalent before the beginning date of the grant.
* Applicants may not hold a doctoral degree at the time of application.
Exceptions:
Applicants who have not earned a B.A. degree or the equivalent, but who have extensive professional study and/or experience in fields in which they wish to pursue a project, may be considered.
In the creative and performing arts, four years of professional study and/or experience meet the basic eligibility requirement.
Applicants in medicine must have an M.D. or the equivalent (e.g., D.D.S., O.D.) degree at the time of application.
Note: Doctors of medicine who wish primarily to continue medical or hospital training or to obtain additional practical clinical experience abroad should apply to IIE. A scholar with an M.D. degree who has completed formal postgraduate training and proposes attachment to a hospital or clinic for the purpose of independent or collaborative research should apply to the Council for International Exchange of Scholars.
Applicants may hold a J.D. degree at the time of application.
* Applicants must have sufficient proficiency in the written and spoken language of the host country to communicate with people and to carry out the proposed study.
* Good health. Grantees will be required to submit a satisfactory Certificate of Health completed by a medical doctor.
To apply for this program through the University of Michigan, applicants must (a) be U-M students, alumni or staff; (b) be U.S. citizens; (c) have completed an undergraduate degree by the beginning of the award; and (d) demonstrate the language skills necessary to complete the proposed project.

You will receive a maintenance allowance, insurance, and travel funds, which should allow you to complete your project without financial worry. You aren't asked for a budget because you will be provided with adequate funds for that country and project.

Must choose to study in one of the countries approved by IIE.

Application Process and Required Materials:

Applicants must submit one copy of their application form (signed), project proposal (maximum length: 2 pages, single-spaced 12-pt. font), personal statement (maximum length: 1 page, single-spaced, 12-pt. font), official transcript for all undergraduate and graduate work, and original or faxed letter(s) of affiliation (if any). Three letters of recommendation must be submitted through the Embark application system, as well in hard copy (see instructions on the web site).
