Applications must be submitted by the institution of higher education. Applicants must be US citizens admitted to a PhD degree program in population dynamics or a related field such as applied mathematics, statistics, or quantitative ecology at an institution of higher education in the United States or its territories, or submit a signed letter from the institution indicating provisional acceptance to a PhD degree program conditional on obtaining financial support such as this fellowship.

Funding Abstract: 

In 1999, NOAA National Sea Grant Office and NOAA Fisheries established a Graduate Fellowship Program in two specialized areas: population dynamics and marine resource economics. Population dynamics is the study of fish populations as affected by fishing mortality, growth, recruitment and natural mortality. Ph.D. candidates interested in the population dynamics of living marine resources and the development and implementation of quantitative methods for assessing their status can receive up to three years of funding. Ph.D. students in marine resource economics, concentrating on the conservation and management of living marine resources, can receive two years of funding.

Application Process and Required Materials: 

Applications must be submitted through www.grants.gov
Applications must include the following elements:
1) Signed title page
2) Project summary
3) Budget and budget justification
4) C.V. of the student, the faculty advisor, and the NMFS mentor (2 pages max. per investigator)
5) Signed letter of commitment from the prospective NMFS mentor
6) Official copies of all undergraduate and graduate student transcripts
7) Education and career goal statement from the student indicating the number of years for which the student is seeking support
8) Three signed letters of recommendation, including one from the faculty advisor
9) Proof of application, acceptance, provisional acceptance, and enrollment in the case of students entering graduate school if they are selected for the fellowship

Funding Restrictions: 

16 2/3 percent ($6,417) of funds must be matched by the institution of higher education as the required 50 percent match of NSGO funds. Allocation of matching funds must be specified in the budget and may consist of up to one/half month's salary for the faculty advisor, waived tuition, equipment and supplies, and any other costs typically used as matching funds.
