Summary of Project Idea:

The students on this project, in partnership with the United States Forest Service’s (USFS) Urban Connections program aim to determine the feasibility of bringing a place-based education teacher-training program, entitled a Forest for Every Classroom, to Milwaukee and Chicago.  Urban Connections is a program of the USFS which strives to connect urban constituents to their national forests and grasslands in five cities throughout the Eastern Region of the United States.  Place-based education encourages teachers to use their local environment as an extension of the classroom in order to teach all subjects, connect students to their neighborhoods, and create environmental stewards along the way.  The Forest for Every Classroom teacher-training program was developed in Vermont through a partnership between USFS, National Park Service, National Wildlife Federation and local non-profit environmental education center, Shelburne Farms.  If adopted in Milwaukee and Chicago, the program will reach out to urban teachers and train them to utilize the city’s available natural resources, especially parks and schoolyards, to develop environmentally aware students.  The Master’s project team aims to establish whether or not a need for such a program exists in the urban centers of Milwaukee and Chicago, and will make recommendations to USFS on how to best implement this program and adapt it to suit urban audiences.
