Professor Bryant receives award from international environmental group

10/18/2008

Bunyan Bryant, a professor at the U-M School of Natural Resources and Environment, received an award from the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) for "Outstanding Service to EE by an Individual at the Regional Level."

The award is given each year to a person who has made a significant contribution to environmental education in an area of the person's country that extends beyond a local impact. (Bryant and previous award recipients are highlighted on the NAAEE Web site, í‚  http://www.naaee.org/programs-and-initiatives/awards/.)

í‚  Bryant has helped hundreds of environmental educators develop a personal and professional philosophy on education's role in addressing society's most pressing environmental issues. He has influenced many of today's environmental education leaders. Through his courses and research, he has made environmental justice an essential element of environmental education.

Bryant has been a pioneer and national leader in environmental justice and that has made the growth in NAAEE to include an interest group (commission) possible. He moderated the first major panel on this subject two years ago and that has led NAAEE to take on significantly more work in environmental justice.í‚   For more than30 years, he has been a change agent that has led to growth, and increasingly, inclusion in the field.

Bryant attended the NAAEE ceremony at its conference in Wichita, Kans., Oct.18 to accept the award.
