Funding Abstract:

Research grants of $500 to $1500 are available subject to certain conditions. Grants are available for conservation work or research which may be of conservation benefit.

Applications are assessed on a quarterly basis as described in the advice for applicants. An initial assessment is made by a conservation sub-committee and the applications that best match the aims of the programme then have to be approved by the Council of the Neotropical Bird Club. You will be informed of the outcome of your application as soon as possible thereafter.

Type of Funding:
Grant
Funding Comments:

Applications due yearly on January 7, April 1, July 1, and October 1.

Application Process and Required Materials:

Awards are made subject to the following conditions:

  • Recipients undertake the project at their own risk. The Neotropical Bird Club accepts no responsibility for any loss or injury which might occur during the implementation of a project.

  • Recipients of an award are acting on their own behalf. The name of the Neotropical Bird Club must not be used as a means to gain access to restricted areas, institutions or persons nor as a justification for undertaking research without proper authority.

  • Recipients of the award will be required to provide:

    • a short project update immediately following completion of the project (for publication in the Conservation Awards section of Cotinga);

    • a paper for potential publication in Cotinga within six months of project completion. Publication will be at the discretion of the Cotinga editor.

Funding Restrictions:

Applicants are advised that, other than in exceptional cases, awards will only be given to projects that meet all the following three criteria:

  • projects with a total budget small enough for the NBC award to be a significant proportion of that total. The maximum amount that can be requested is US$1,500 and projects are typically awarded US$1,000-1,200;

  • projects that are likely to achieve constructive local engagement in some form, such as environmental education in local communities, working with local decision-making or land-management organisations, or local/international publicity.

  • projects that are likely to achieve high global conservation benefit. This means that the project must target either globally threatened species or globally important sites, as defined below, in order to be eligible for funding, unless there is an exceptional reason to waive this rule (e.g. species new to science). It is essential that your project makes a direct contribution to species or site conservation, or as a minimum is developed in close collaboration with a conservation agency or organisation. We do not fund projects that lack a strong conservation focus, e.g. pure avian biology research. Environmental education projects that encourage the conservation of threatened species or globally important sites are eligible.
