This course draws on conservation biology, development studies, environmental governance, and policy and institutional analyses to examine theories, assumptions, current practice and empirical evidence about the nature of the relationship between conservation and development goals.í‚   We will also examine the implementation of joint conservation and development strategies in an applied context, including a brief survey of relevant international conventions, policies, agencies, and project design issues.í‚   Examples are drawn from around the low-income tropics, with a particular focus on conservation and development challenges in sub-saharan Africa and in forest ecosystems.í‚   Class will be discussion oriented, and will encourage critical thinking and writing skills related to exploring these complex issues from empirical and applied perspectives.
