NOMINATION REQUEST: Rackham Predoctoral Fellowship for 2010-2011

Approximately 72 fellowships will be awarded campus-wide for 2010-11; approximately 240 students are nominated each year.  This award consists of candidacy tuition and registration fees, GradCare health insurance, and a $2,250 monthly stipend for a maximum of 12 months.  Applicants must be advanced to candidacy by 15 January 2010 and must be nominated by their department. These fellowships are awarded to outstanding students who will complete their dissertation in the year in which they hold the fellowship AND who will complete the doctorate within 6 years of beginning their program (includes time in UM master's).

SNRE may nominate up to five (5) students.

Students wishing to be considered for nomination should work with their faculty advisor and provide materials to me, via e-mail attachments, no later than 21 OCTOBER 2009.  Pre-nominations should consist of the following:

1. Faculty nominator to provide 1-2 substantial paragraphs (via e-mail) describing the student's outstanding qualities and appropriateness for nomination. If more than 5 eligible students are nominated, the Admissions/ Scholarship Committee will rank them, so please provide detailed information. THE NOMINATION STATEMENT SHOULD NOT EXCEED 1 PAGE IN LENGTH.

  1. a. Provide the specific anticipated PhD completion date
  2. b. Describe the uniqueness of the research and the contribution that will be made to the area of study
  3. c. Describe the student's service to the SNRE/UM community

2. Student provides, via e-mail attachment (please refer to the website, see below, for application form and instructions):

  1. a. Pre-Doctoral Fellowship Application Form
  2. b. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  3. c. Statement (not to exceed 750 words, approximately 2 pages)

TIMELINE:

21 Oct-Faculty and nominees provide pre-nomination materials to Diana W

6 Nov-Admissions/Scholarship Committee decides on final nominees

9 Nov-Diana W notifies applicants of nomination decisions

11 Dec-Student provides final version of application materials to Diana W

11 Dec-Faculty nominator provides draft text for dept cover letter to Diana W

11 Dec-Faculty nominator provides his/her final recommendation letter to Diana W

11 Dec-Additional letters of recommendation from two (2) letter writers are due to Diana W

13 Jan-Diana W submits nomination packet to Rackham

During the tenure of the fellowship, students may not accept employment requiring more than 10 working hours weekly.  Such employment must be approved by the Rackham Fellowships and Recruitment Office in response to a written request from the student.  A student must also notify the Rackham Fellowships office if s/he receives additional fellowship support.  The recipient of a substantial additional award will be required to relinquish all or part of the Rackham Fellowship.
