Class format: First half lecture-style (either by Bunnell or guest speaker); second half will include student-led discussion on readings.
Includes above, plus stock assessment assignments, and group presentation (last two weeks).
Stock assessment assignments (3): Students will use existing fisheries data to estimate traditional fisheries analyses: von Bertalanffy growth curve, bioenergetic models, catch-curve analyses, stock/recruit models etc.í‚
Group presentations: In groups of 2-3, students will collaborate to learn more about emerging fisheries science and management approaches, and offer their findings during a 30-minute presentation in the last two weeks of class.í‚ Bunnell will work with groups to develop a topic and provide general direction.í‚ Potential topics could include elaborations on previously discussed topics in seminar or those that were not the focus of this course (otolith microchemistry, adaptive management, decision-analysis modeling, human dimensions, fisheries economics, marine (and freshwater) reserves, invasive-species control, selective effects of fishing).
