The world is flat. As David Held, a British scholar in political science, once said, globalization is the í¢â‚¬Å“widening, deepening and speeding up of worldwide interconnectedness in all aspects of contemporary social life.í¢â‚¬  The same is true for sustainability. Yet the information on sustainability in developing countries is often not well received in the developed world.

Course statement

               This special-topics seminar on water politics will familiarize students with the rationale behind the rise of mega-scale water engineering projects in this country, as well as the effects these kinds of projects have had on ecological functioning, human health, and cultural practices. The course syllabus will be handed out the first day of class.

In this seminar we will read key articles related to biodiversity and ecosystem services (such as production, pollination and pest control) in agroecosystems, conduct an extensive literature review, construct a data set with results from the literature, analyze these data and write a review article for a peer-reviewed journal. We will also learn how to conduct meta-analyses based on published articles and will read various articles that use meta-analyses.
