Instructor: Professor Stan Jones
Course Description:
This course will focus upon the theories, precedents, processes, and techniques central to the creation of successful, vibrant, socially and ecologically í¢â‚¬Ëœjustí¢â‚¬â„¢ public spaces. Through course readings, site visits, class discussions, and case study research, students will develop an understanding of the complex issues present in the creation of positive outdoor places within the urban realm. Examples of successful places will be discussed and dissected in class, and several walks in and around campus will be utilized to highlight many of the issues discussed in very real terms. Students will develop a critical eye as to what makes a place successful from as broad a spectrum of points-of-view as possible, including both social and ecological frames of reference. Specific attention will be directed towards the implications for those involved in the creation of public spaces, including landscape architects, architects, planners, sociologists, urban designers, ecologists, and others.
