Doctoral student named Presidential Management Fellow finalist

April 4, 2011

Andy Winkelman, a doctoral student at the School of Natural Resources and Environment, has been named a Presidential Management Fellow finalist. Presidential Management Fellowships (PMFs) are highly competitive two-year post-graduate fellowships with a federal agency.

Fellows are selected for their exceptional leadership qualities, and agencies groom them to be future leaders. Fellows have the opportunity to rotate to other agencies, are eligible for accelerated promotion potential, receive 160 hours of formalĀ  classroom training (on leadership, management, policy and other topics), and can receive an immediate appointment to a position in the competitive or excepted service.

Winkelman joined the SNRE doctoral program in the fall of 2007 and is studying Resource Policy and Behavior. He also has earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Michigan. His adviser is Professor Gregory Keoleian.

Winkelman is one of 850 finalists selected from a field of more than 9,100 top graduate students. He and the other PMF finalists travel to Washington D.C., this month for the PMF Finalist Job Fair to interview with various federal agencies.

(For SNRE master's and Ph.D. students interested in this program, visit SNRE's PMF website to learn more about applying in the fall in your graduating year and to see other SNRE graduates who have served as Presidential Management Fellows.)
