Fall 2011 course - NRE 501 section 296 "Building Sustainable Landscapes"
NRE 501 section 296
Building Sustainable Landscapes
Prof. Stan Jones
Course Description
This studio will provide students with a "hands-on" experience in landscape and architectural construction, affording them an opportunity to explore the possibilities and limitations that materials such as earth, water, wood, concrete, and metals bring to a project in the field. Participants will also become familiar with basic construction methods and practices, and learn how different tools are utilized to create the elements found in a specific site design. The overarching goal for the project is for students to understand the relationship between design intent and design realization. The course offers an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge and experience that will be useful in moving their current and future work from concept to design to construction with a greater degree of rigor and understanding.
Project Overview
The project involves a continuation of design work began last spring by students in SNRE. Having developed a conceptual design, this course will take that design and begin to make it a reality. Students will finalize design elements, details, and materials and will then began to work on implementation of the final design. Class time will be spent predominantly on-site, while out-of-class time will be spent both preparing for the next on-site session, although our goal will be to also create an í¢â‚¬Ëœas-builtí¢â‚¬â„¢ set of construction documents for the project, along with a management plan for the site. Students will work with UM Facilities staff on certain aspects of the work, and will ultimately work to create a finished landscape that communicates to the larger campus community the ideals central to SNRE.
