John DeCicco has been appointed as a research professor at the Michigan Memorial Phoenix Energy Institute (MMPEI). DeCicco holds a joint appointment as a newly-named professor of practice at the School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE), where since 2009 he served as a senior lecturer and MMPEI faculty fellow.

DeCicco brings to MMPEI a national reputation built on more than two decades of experience in energy systems and environmental policy analysis.  From 2001-09, he was senior fellow for automotive strategies at the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). From 1990-2000, he was transportation director at the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE).

At MMPEI, DeCicco leads research on analyzing petroleum demand and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from vehicle-fuel systems, assessing alternative fuels including biofuels, electricity and other advanced technologies, and evaluating policies as well as the broader economic and sustainability impacts of transportation energy systems. At SNRE, he teaches courses and guides student research on these topics. He is also part of the MMPEI and SNRE team working on the U.S.-China Clean Energy Research Center for Clean Vehicles (CERC-CV) initiative.

DeCicco has three books, more than 100 published papers, reports, and formal public policy submissions to his credit. He has testified before Congress and in other federal and state forums, and co-authored energy systems modeling and policy studies. His prior research on vehicle efficiency was influential in building the scientific case for stronger fuel economy standards. He has been a leader in developing consumer information about automotive environmental performance and his recent research gives increasing emphasis to GHG emissions from transportation fuel systems. DeCicco received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Princeton University in 1988.
