The FY14 Rackham Non-Traditional Fellowship program is available to aid master's students who return to graduate school after an extended absence (see below).
The award will be equivalent to one term of tuition and associated fees. Students must be nominated by their program.
Each school may nominate up to three students. Funding will be available for the Winter 2014 term.
Eligibility: Student must have been away from academic study toward a formal degree for at least five years immediately prior to beginning their master's program (unless certain courses were required as a prerequisite within one year of beginning the graduate program); and be a 1st or 2nd year master’s student. Students may only receive this award once per master's program.
Selection criteria: Selection will be based on academic merit, financial need, and motivation to complete the degree. Special consideration will be given to applicants who have been out of the work force or are changing fields or careers. Michigan residents are preferred.
Students interested in being nominated for this funding must provide the following to dianaw@umich.edu, via e-mail attachment, no later than Friday, 13 September 2013:
- A personal statement specifically addressing reasons for the interruption of studies; academic interests, motivation for returning to school; professional interests; financial need; and an explanation of how the student’s situation fits within the intent of the fellowship program (1,500 word maximum)
- Current CV
- Arrange for a faculty member to support his/her request by sending a nomination statement to dianaw@umich.edu, describing why s/he would be appropriate for nomination—note student’s academic promise in his/her field of study; the proposed timetable of study (particularly any plan for part-time study); and current commitment and anticipated funding support.
